Several leaders of the Jubilee of Prayer on the Mall noted that it was being held today because, as Marco Rubio put it, 250 years ago today, “our forefathers gathered for a national day of fasting and prayer.” Actually, what the Continental Congress called for in 1776 was a “day of HUMILIATION, Fasting and Prayer.” Humiliation. Currently, both innovation and economic survival is being driven by philanthropic grants and donations (while private equity largely funds consolidation and erosion of local news). It is time for the local news world to learn and borrow from other sectors where “catalytic capital” has had a positive impact, such as affordable housing, green energy and arts and culture.
