Steven Vargas (he/him) is an arts and entertainment reporter with a focus on dance, race and social justice.

He's currently a graduate student at the University of Southern California where he is pursuing an M.A. in Specialized Journalism (The Arts) and writing his thesis on dance as a tool for abolition. “The work is about healing,” choreographer and cancer survivor Jacob Jonas said. We’re sitting against the brick wall of a building with the sun beating down, a few feet from the entrance to the Los Angeles Ballet studio in Sawtelle, where dancers in Jonas’ eponymous company practice for “Keeping Score,” a trilogy by Jonas premiering next week at the BroadStage in Santa Monica. They finish rehearsal by stretching and running through choreography. Music blasts.

After 20 years as one of the city’s most respected and energetic homes for contemporary dance in Los Angeles, Bodytraffic plans an intentional sunset in July at the conclusion of its current season, the company is expected to announce Thursday. The company’s end wasn’t planned, but it became necessary when its artistic director and co-founder, Tina Finkelman Berkett, decided to step back from her role, citing fundraising fatigue and a desire for change.

The late Chris Burden’s 2001 “Nomadic Folly” will be shown by Gagosian at this year’s Frieze art fair in Santa Monica. Art fair season has arrived in Los Angeles. Every February the city is packed with festivals, new exhibitions, performances and other events. This year’s celebration comes with an unexpected backdrop: the aftermath of the Palisades and Eaton fires, which destroyed thousands of homes, including those of artists who also lost their work and their workspaces.
