Northern Ireland's fishing industry hit by soaring fuel prices and operation restrictions

Fishermen have told UTV that a crisis facing Northern Ireland's fishing industry is costing them their livelihoods due to soaring fuel prices and restrictions on where they can operate. Concerns around working visas have also been raised at a meeting with the Secretary of State in Kilkeel. It is estimated that around 70% of workers on fleets, which are operating out of fishing ports in Northern Ireland, are from overseas. "From 50p a litre to £1.28 a litre—it’s a massive jump.

Eel fisherman takes Stormont's environment department to court over Lough Neagh blue-green algae

An eel fisherman has taken Stormont’s Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) to court over the blue-green algae crisis in Lough Neagh. The judicial review brought by Declan Conlon argues that the department is continuing to rely on ‘inadequate plans’ and ‘unenforced pollution regimes’, despite what’s unfolded in the lough over the last number of years. Mr Conlon’s family has fished Lough Neagh for generations.
