Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I'll let you know if it ever comes.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, I am that old.

How is social media changing news?

It is where I get the vast majority of my news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Don't have one.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

I would ask a real journalist! I have total respect for many of them and what they do.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

No idea

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop and a number of applications.

What's your favorite social network?

LinkedIn

Who do you wish followed you?

Key governmental lawmakers who should be trying to understand the technology they look to regulate.

Why did you become a journalist?

I didn't.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope, not a journalist. I'm a tech operator. A very different type of analyst.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Unraveling the complexity and cost of AI today.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be comfortable not having all the answers, and find folks who can repeatedly help you piece things together.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I like to do a briefing under an embargo or NDA, and then I can go on the record, usually a podcast, followed by something written.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Typical funding pitches, etc are not getting me excited. I get excited by a pitch that talks about how the use cases are solved for orgs.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Was about funding of a startup with no sort of validation.

What's your favorite drink?

I am a craft beer person.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

It really depends on the week and the travel schedule. I tend to review my inbox at the end of the day.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I read a number of publications, from the big ones like WSJ to smaller ones like The Information.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

"My beat" and a major misconception is that I have a narrow view, where I am more full-stack. That doesn't mean deep everywhere.
