Did you know that if you went to a drag show in Florida, the state may be attempting to track you down? As the AP has reported, a Florida prosecutor recently subpoenaed the records of the Kilted Mermaid, a Vero Beach wine bar, demanding copies of guest lists, reservation logs, surveillance video, and contracts identifying drag performers. You may not think about it much, but you have a threat model, and this story offers a perfect example of how anybody’s threat model can change on a dime.

Default Men & Self-as-User Syndrome: How Toxic Masculinity Affects Design

It may help to state from the outset that, no, “not all” masculinity is “toxic.” “Toxic” is an adjective modifying a noun, so not all versions of that noun require that particular adjective. But, yes, we can establish that toxic masculinity does affect digital design. For the purposes of our discussion, let’s define “toxic masculinity.” Interestingly enough, the term was coined by a man, the psychologist Shepherd Bliss, who has been influential in what he called the “mytho-poetic” movement.
