“Its success was something no one could have expected”: How Oeksound's Soothe became one of modern production's most ubiquitous plugins
For example, a Fairchild 660 (whether hardware or a decent software emulation) has a legendary reputation as a vocal compressor, but its charms often aren’t as apparent in a mastering context. Similarly, a Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor has a near-magical ability to add “glue” and cohesiveness to a mix, but is not so impressive when slapped onto a vocal track.

"It's remarkable that this powerful synth can be picked up for free": We pit 5 of the best soft synths against each other
Today's designers of modern software synths face no such constraints. Once they have a computer model for an oscillator, a filter, or an envelope, they can cram as many of these models as you like into a synth without adding any expense or impracticality.

"It's possible to end up with exactly the sound you were looking for without once thinking about frequencies, filters and all the rest of it": 5 innovative synth plugins daring to do things differently
With none of the physical and financial constraints of hardware - and all the benefits of modern CPU power - there's an even greater diversity when it comes to software synths. Models of classic instruments abound, but there are also many entirely original synths, a good number of which boast capabilities that would have made Don Buchla throw down his soldering iron in despair.
Single cell transcriptional evolution of myeloid leukemia of Down syndrome
|
Abstract Children with Down syndrome have a 150-fold increased risk of developing myeloid leukaemia (ML-DS). Unusually for a childhood leukaemia, ML-DS arises from a preleukaemic state, termed transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM), via a conserved sequence of mutations. Here, we examine the relationship between the genetic and transcriptional evolution of ML-DS from natural variation; a rich collection of primary patient samples and foetal tissues with a range of constitutional karyotypes.

Opinion: 19 years and still building
There’s a quiet moment most mornings across Utah. It happens before the freeway fills, before storefronts open, before the first emails are sent. Lights flick on in kitchens from Logan to St. George. Someone pulls on work boots. Someone else opens a laptop. A small-business owner flips the sign to “open.” A student heads out the door, already thinking about what comes next. These moments, repeated thousands of times each day, are Utah’s economy. Not charts. Not rankings. Not headlines. People.

A non-canonical lymphoblast in refractory childhood T-cell leukaemia - Nature Communications
Abstract Refractory cancers may arise either through the acquisition of resistance mechanisms or represent distinct disease states. The origin of childhood T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) that does not respond to initial treatment, i.e. refractory disease, is unknown. Refractory T-ALL carries a poor prognosis and cannot be predicted at diagnosis. Here, we perform single cell mRNA sequencing of T-ALL from 58 children (84 samples) who did, or did not respond to initial treatment.
“When the bubble bursts, the grandiose claims about the technology will be shown to be massively overblown”: AI in music production –where should we draw the line?
After all, you can’t make a synth without electronics, you can’t make a trumpet without smelting metal, and you can’t make a flute if you lack the wherewithal to hollow out the inside of a stick. The positive feedback loop of this intertwined relationship has functioned beautifully for millennia, with technological invention driving creativity in music, and imagination in music driving creativity in technology.

One of the most commonly used effects in music production, reverb can be heard on almost every song we listen to. Shaping, sculpting and fine-tuning your reverb can dramatically transform the character of a sound, making it a hugely creative and powerful tool across production, mixing and sound design.

How to use reverb to create unique spatial effects
Using reverb as reverb – that is, using it to create acoustic spaces and interesting ambiences – we know that there are all sorts of creative things we can do within this context. But there are also various ways in which we can harness reverb as a sound source or instrument in-and-of itself, and use it to create special effects that have a distinctive character all of their own. A good example is a strange resonance trick that many (but not all) algorithmic reverbs can pull off.
Absolute quantification of rare gene targets in limited samples using crude lysate and ddPCR
Abstract Background Accurate quantification of rare genes from limited clinical samples is crucial for research purposes but is technically challenging. In particular, nucleic acid extraction for quantification of gene targets may lead to target loss. Here, we report the development and validation of a novel crude lysate ddPCR assay for the absolute quantification of rare genes, TRECs in our case, from infrequent cells, that removes the need for DNA extraction, hence minimizing the target loss.
