Wesleyan takes a forward-looking approach to technology with Lenovo

With hundreds of financial advisors working both in the office and in external locations, across devices including laptops and desktops, the company’s approach to technology remained very old-fashioned.

Why Love?
A relational imperative By Stuart Gill St. Nikolai Velimirovich once said that - while a scholar attracts by knowledge, the wealthy by riches, the handsome by beauty, and the artist by skill: "Only love attracts all human beings. The attraction of love is unlimited. And educated and uneducated, rich or poor, skilled or unskilled, beautiful or ugly, healthy or sick, and young or old - all want to be loved." Love is a confounding idea.
Introducing the Relational Imperative
When one of my kids provokes the other, or when I catch myself in a similar act, I remind them (or myself) that they are not just a 'Fred,' 'Lulu' or 'Amie' but also a 'Gill.' Hurting someone in our family also hurts them. They might not immediately feel the consequences, but they eventually will. There is a powerful and well-known American Indian parable that tells the story of our internal struggle. "One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
A bridge to success: Using AI to raise the bar in special education

First game-based classroom at UNC-Chapel Hill made possible by Lenovo Grant
Gone are the days when college students would be considered slacking on their studies if they chose to pick up a video game controller over a textbook. For some students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, video games are the textbook. They have Dr. Courtney Rivard to thank for that. Dr. Rivard is the Director of the Digital Literacy and Communications (DLC) Lab and Teaching Associate Professor in English & Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Our ‘Connected Commonwealth’ - Stuart Gill
Today marks 70 years since eight countries signed the 1949 London Declaration establishing the modern Commonwealth, a voluntary partnership of equal member countries based on common values and shared aspirations. In April 2018, the UK hosted the 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, in London. It was the largest of its kind in our country’s history and a fitting way to follow Malta’s wonderful success in Valletta in 2015.

Ways to Use Bundling to Drive up Your Average Sales Price (ASP) and Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV)
To increase our ASP and CLTV, we need to coordinate our product, pricing, and marketing strategies. This means we need to understand the relationships and impact of each on bundling. “But wait…there’s more!” We’ve all heard the infomercials with the two for the price of one special. Or the five accessories we theoretically should never need since the first one is supposedly indestructible. All of this for only $19.99 plus shipping and handling. Bundling at its finest. But wait.
People at the heart of Brexit - Stuart Gill
As a diplomat, my professional obsession is with the relationships between countries, whether between Malta and the UK, or the UK and the EU, or the US, and so on. I have done this from London and from several countries around the world but I have always understood that relationships between countries are not just part of an elaborate board game. They are about people.
Higher level of bilateral relationship - Stuart Gill
I have been wondering when to go into print again about Brexit. With the negotiations on the Withdrawal Agreement in their endgame, it is hard to judge when best to contribute with my own public commentary, but I have been thinking that I might try to inject some perspective into the debate. My urge to write was intensified when I read John Vassallo’s analysis in his piece in The Sunday Times of Malta, which I’m afraid did not shed much light.
Design Thinking, Empathy, and the Ideal Customer Experience Design
You’ve made market intelligence a priority. The team has been diligently speaking to customers. Customer problems have emerged from interviews that fit your product strategy and vision. You understand the competition and are seeing trends in where the industry is heading. The big day has arrived – the product launch. Anticipation is high as you have incorporated everything you heard into this release. Thud! How can this be? You go through your mental checklist. Your team interviewed customers? Check.
Why the Sales and Marketing Functions Need to Care About Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
How often do you hear sales and marketing teams being critical of the product portfolio? Your products! It is easy for people to sit in the cheap seats and judge. But why does it continue to happen? Ironically, it’s because they are sitting in those proverbial cheap seats and not being actively involved. Yes, sales and marketing teams need to both care about, and be involved in PLM. The immediate push back to this position is “but that is product management’s responsibility”.
How to Kill a Sales Team in 90 Days
In as little as one quarter, sales and morale are down. You are considering abandoning the process. Yet last year, the sales management program you did implement is producing results. You followed the same program with sales process as you did with sales management. Sure, some things are different on your team this year than last year, but how can it turn bad so quick? So you ask yourself: Why do some solutions work and others don’t? The answer: It is all about the timing.
Using a Product Roadmap to Win Deals and Differentiate in the Marketplace
A product road map generates some of the most contentious debates in the product life cycle. While this is reality today, it can not only be avoided, but can be a strength. You hear “I can’t share it because Sales will sell products that are not ready”. Or maybe “they are selling features that are out of scope”. Score and weight the effectiveness of these features with our Backlog Feature Scoring Tool. Similar comments are also made about Marketing.
Russia’s dangerous behaviour - Stuart Gill
On a quiet Sunday in one of Britain’s most beautiful cathedral cities, a father and daughter were struck down by the first offensive use of a nerve agent in Europe since World War II. Sergei and Yulia Skripal are still lying stricken in hospital. A police officer who went to their aid fell into a critical condition. Another 35 people were forced to seek medical treatment simply because they were nearby when the nerve agent was released.
CHOGM 2018: towards a common future - Stuart Gill
The UK is delighted to be hosting the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in April, taking over from Malta as the new chair-in-office. We will be doing our very best to match Malta’s wonderful CHOGM 2015 by building on the strengths of “Our Commonwealth”, a unique family of human networks and the people-to-people links. The summit will bring leaders together to work to ensure that the Commonwealth has the institutional strength to face common challenges effectively.
Victims of chemical warfare
Every year, the global community pauses on April 29 to remember victims of chemical warfare. The United Nations promotes international awareness and action against these horrific weapons that strike insidiously and indiscriminately, causing agonising death and injury to people who have no way to protect themselves. This year will be all the more poignant as the images of the shocking chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun in Syria still resonate.

Brexit can make us stronger
After six months as British High Commissioner to Malta, the advice I was given by my friends and colleagues about Malta has been proved right. Britain and Malta are about as close to each other as is possible without actually having a land border.

Duke Basketball: Allen back after just one game
Duke basketball’s Grayson Allen was named a starter for Wednesday’s matchup against Georgia Tech. Per the team’s official Instagram and Twitter pages, Grayson Allen will start alongside Luke Kennard, Jayson Tatum, Amile Jefferson and Harry Giles. This means that, for Blue Devil fans, the day has finally come, all three of the high-ranked freshman are active and Duke will have their most experienced leader on the court after a one game absence.
Big 12 Basketball: Texas Tech downs No. 7 West Virginia
In a game with 13 ties and nearly 20 lead changes, Texas Tech was able to come out with their first Big 12 win in large part due to their high free-throw percentage and ability to take care of the basketball. They defeated No. 7 West Virginia, 77-76 in OT, in a back-and-forth affair. Zach Smith finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for the Red Raiders, while Keenan Evans and Anthony Livingston chipped in 12 apiece.

Duke Basketball: Blue Devils struggle without Allen in loss to Hokies
With Grayson Allen missing the first game of his indefinite suspension, Duke struggled to score and lacked effort on defense in a 89-75 loss to Virginia Tech that was much more one-sided than the score would indicate. Luke Kennard had an incredible individual effort as he finished with 34 points on 11-of-19 shooting and seven rebounds. Jayson Tatum dropped 18 and grabbed seven rebounds of his own in the loss, and freshman Harry Giles scored his first collegiate points in 13 minutes off the bench.
LSU Basketball: Johnny Jones dismisses Craig Victor II
LSU basketball loses some depth up front for the rest of conference play. Just before LSU opened conference play on Thursday night, starting forward Craig Victor II was dismissed from the team. Head coach Johnny Jones stated the move was made in response to a violation of team rules, though he did not specify the exact nature of Victor’s infraction. “We are obviously disappointed that we had to take this action,” Jones said in a statement. “It’s a privilege and an honor to wear the LSU uniform.
Virginia Basketball: Cavs take down Cardinals on the road
An exciting match-up between two of the ACC’s premier teams took place on Wednesday night, with Virginia basketball taking down Louisville. The Virginia Cavaliers pulled off a road victory, 61-53, over the Louisville Cardinals on Wednesday evening at the KFC Yum! Center. It was both teams’ first ACC game of the 2016-17 season. London Perrantes finished with nine points and seven assists for the Cavaliers, while Devon Hall chipped in 10 points to lead all scorers.
San Diego State Basketball: Aztecs advance to Diamond Head Classic championship
San Diego State basketball used a huge burst in the second half to pull away from Tulsa. The San Diego State Aztecs (7-4) advanced to the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii thanks to a late burst in the second half against Tulsa. Sophomore Jeremy Hemsley (16.2 points) led the way for the Aztecs, scoring 20 points in the victory. Big man Zylan Cheatham added 15 on 50 percent shooting, while junior guard Trey Kell chipped in 19.
Louisville Basketball: Cards take down Wildcats at home
Louisville basketball won the biggest game of their season thus far, defeating their rival at the KFC Yum! Center. A game which saw 10+ ties and lead changes would come down to the final seconds, with Louisville coming out on top, 73-70, over Kentucky. The Cardinals were led by guard Quentin Snider, who had the team’s first 20-point game of the season.
Iowa Basketball: Hawkeyes fail to shake hands with North Dakota following heated game
Iowa basketball did not shake hands with North Dakota following what was a physical 40-minute game. Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery was visibly upset following a series of events which took place in the final seconds of his team’s victory over the University of North Dakota. UND’s Quinton Hooker would foul Iowa’s Peter Jok at half court, trying to strip the ball away. North Dakota’s ensuing possession would end with Nicholas Baer intercepting a pass in the post with just five seconds to go.
Gonzaga Basketball: Zags down Volunteers in first true road game
Gonzaga basketball came away with an 86-76 victory over Tennessee thanks to a strong collective effort on offense and a great first half defensively. In their first true road game of the season, Gonzaga defeated the Tennessee Volunteers, 86-76. Five Bulldogs reached double digits in scoring, led by Washington transfer Nigel Williams-Goss, who had 20. Przemek Karnowski chipped in 10, and missed a double-double by just one rebound.
Arizona Basketball: Wildcats hang on against charging Texas A&M Aggies
Arizona basketball nearly gave this game away to Texas A&M in Houston, Texas. In a game that originally looked like a blowout, Arizona defeated Texas A&M, 67-63, in the final seconds. Both the Wildcats and the Aggies would start strong, using their bigs to score down low. Dusan Ristic and Lauri Markkanen put up Arizona’s first 13 points in the games opening minutes, and continued to anchor the Wildcat offense throughout the game. They finished with 18 and 17 points respectively.
UCLA Basketball: Bruins drop 102 in victory over Michigan
UCLA won a highly contested shootout, 102-84, against Michigan at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday evening. Impressive 3-point shooting and unselfish play from both UCLA and Michigan made for a close game for about 30 minutes, but the Bruins were eventually able to put the game away behind impressive performances by Lonzo Ball (19 points), Bryce Alford (18 points), Aaron Holiday (17 points) and TJ Leaf, who finished with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Florida Basketball: Isaiah Stokes to become a Gator
Isaiah Stokes, the 2017 forward out of IMG Academy, chose Florida over North Carolina, Iowa State and Tennessee on Thursday. The Memphis, TN product reportedly sent his National Letter of Intent to Florida as early as mid-November, but wished to keep his commitment unknown to the public until he had the time to address his family members personally.
UCLA Basketball: Bruins snag massive victory over Kentucky in Lexington
The UCLA Bruins were able to collect a major road victory at Rupp Arena in Lexington against the Kentucky Wildcats Saturday afternoon. The game was the first real test for both UCLA and Kentucky, but the Bruins came out on top 97-92. Kentucky shot just 42 percent from the field and UCLA turned the ball over an astounding 18 times, including several miscues in the final minute that allowed Kentucky to get back to within just three with 8.2 seconds to go.
Duke Basketball: Five reasons why the Blue Devils will win it all
Due to their talent-rich recruiting class and sizeable group of experienced returnees, the Duke Blue Devils have long been the favorite to cut down the nets in March. They were ranked number one in the country all summer long as analyst after analyst fantasized about how dominant the team with the number one, two and 16 top recruits would be. As we all know, that story still has yet to unfold, as the three most discussed freshmen have not yet taken the court.
Duke Basketball: Wendell Carter completes Blue Devils' /"package deal/"
Five-star big man and the 3rd best recruit in the class of 2017, Wendell Carter, chose Duke over Harvard, Georgia Tech and others on Wednesday. The 6’9? forward from Atlanta joins his long-time Team USA teammate Gary Trent Jr., who after committing to Duke two weeks ago said he would do anything he could to bring Carter along with him. Together, the two top-10 players have given the Blue Devils the sixth best 2017 recruiting class in the nation.
Duke Basketball: Blue Devils take home Hall of Fame Tip-Off crown
Duke handed the Rhode Island Rams their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Tip-off. Duke was led by sophomore Luke Kennard who dropped 24 points, including an efficient 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Kennard’s 9th career game with over 20 points came at a crucial time for the Blue Devils, who surprisingly were not able to rely on guards Grayson Allen (who was less than 100 percent) and Matt Jones on the offensive end.
Maryland Basketball: Melo Trimble exits exhibition with ankle injury
The Maryland Terrapins were able to dominate Division II Catawba College (NC) despite losing their most accomplished scorer in Melo Trimble to a sprained ankle in the first half. Head coach Mark Turgeon has since said that Trimble’s injury is a “grade 1” sprain and that the junior isn’t expected to miss much time.
Purdue Basketball: Ryan Cline suspended for season opener
Head coach Matt Painter and the Purdue Boilermakers suspended Ryan Cline on Tuesday for violating team rules. Cline already was forced to sit out a recent exhibition game, but will also miss the team’s closed scrimmage against West Virginia and the season opener against McNeese State. Since the official announcement of the suspension, more details of the nature of the violation have emerged.
SEC Basketball: In-depth conference preview
The SEC continues to display one of the most unbalanced distributions of talent among major conferences in college basketball. Kentucky head coach John Calipari has once again assembled himself an extremely young and even more athletic group of players who know how to score as a unit as well as anyone in the country. The Texas A&M Aggies, who finished with the same conference record as Kentucky in the 2015-2016 season (13-5), will likely be in the mix for the second slot in the SEC standings.
Virginia Tech Basketball: Kerry Blackshear Jr. could potentially miss entire season
Due to an off-season surgery for a lingering stress fracture in his right leg, one of Virginia Tech’s most reliable big men, Kerry Blackshear Jr., is unsure if he can suit up this year. The 6’10”, 260 pounder from Florida proved himself worthy of solid minutes in his first year with the team, averaging 6.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19 minutes per game.
