How to spot and fill dangerous gaps in your MHE training
How to find holes in staff MHE training Stuart Taylor is managing director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, a UK training provider for all types of material handling equipment and workplace transport. Operator training is widely recognised as essential for anyone using material handling equipment (MHE). But basic training alone is not enough to maintain a safe workforce in the long term. Unless employers continuously meet training requirements in full, sites can face a higher risk of accidents.
The pH-dependant stabilization and interphase coupling of Pd species during alcohol oxidation
|
Abstract Heterogeneous catalysts consistently suffer from the leaching of active components into the fluid phase, causing loss in activity and lifetime. Here we demonstrate, exemplified with the thermocatalytic oxidation of 1,2-propanediol, a metal stabilization mechanism arising from electrochemical coupling of half reactions between physically separated carbon-supported Au and Pd catalysts.

From London to Dubai: How Assurance Saves Projects
There’s a striking contrast in the world of project delivery. On one end, you have organisations in London fighting for every efficiency, trying to deliver more with less and stretch the value of every pound. On the other, you have Dubai — where the 2040 Urban Master Plan is delivering new districts and infrastructure on timelines that are unimaginable anywhere else. Two very different worlds, with very different priorities.
Keeping pedestrians safe around MHE during busy periods
Keeping pedestrians safe around MHE Stuart Taylor is managing director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, a leading UK training provider for all types of material handling equipment and workplace transport. Many businesses operate material handling equipment (MHE) in areas where pedestrians, both employees and customers, are present, often in close proximity. For this reason, it is essential that effective safety measures are in place to protect everyone onsite.
Guest commentary: Why the fate of America’s auto industry depends on faster software development
Success in today’s automotive industry often depends more on software and connectivity features in the vehicle and how easy they are to operate than on horsepower and performance.
How positive friction prevents forklift accidents before they happen
Stuart Taylor is managing director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, the UK’s leading training provider for all types of material handling equipment and workplace transport. Regardless of what you do for a living, it’s human nature to look for ways to make tasks easier and less time-consuming. If we believe we can still achieve a similar outcome, we will often seek the path of least resistance to get there.

Tandem reductive amination and deuteration over a phosphorus-modified iron center - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Deuterated amines are key building blocks for drug synthesis and the identification of metabolites of new pharmaceuticals, which drives the search for general, efficient, and widely applicable methods for the selective synthesis of such compounds. Here, we describe a multifunctional phosphorus-doped carbon-supported Fe catalyst with highly dispersed isolated metal sites that allow for tandem reductive amination-deuteration sequences.

The critical role of managers in MH safety
Stuart Taylor, managing director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, looks at why it is so important to ensure managers are trained in safety. Could you still pass your driving test today? Over time, complacency and bad habits dangerously dull our risk awareness. In materials handling, this can spell disaster. Annually, forklift accidents in the UK cause around 1,300 serious injuries, impacting 25 people every week with potentially life-altering consequences. The stakes are simply too high to ignore.
Professor Stuart Taylor awarded the 2024 Learned Society of Wales Menelaus Medal

Accredited training – the key to a safer workplace | British Safety Council
The growing need for accredited training Workplace transport accidents are still a major issue. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) frequently reports that many accidents could have been avoided with better training. Often, the problem lies in outdated or insufficient training. When operators aren’t properly trained, the risks multiply. This means serious injuries, costly fines and even fatalities.
The hidden costs of non-compliant inspections
The risk of relying on incomplete inspections It’s easy to assume that once your materials handling equipment has been inspected, you’re covered. Many businesses will hear the term “thorough examination” and naturally assume everything has been inspected. Photograph: CFTS But what if that inspection hasn’t checked everything? Many businesses are unknowingly leaving themselves exposed to serious risks by relying on incomplete Thorough Examinations – and the consequences can be costly.
Forklifts: why regular refresher training and monitoring is key to operational safety
Thankfully, when it comes to forklift trucks, most reputable employers understand the need for basic novice training for new operators. Given the size and power of these machines, it’s easy to see why this is a recognised requirement. Photograph: Mentor FLT Training But what’s just as important is ensuring that any good work done initially to equip an operator to work safely is not lost as time goes on.
Challenging three common myths about PPT safety
Stuart Taylor is managing director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, the UK’s leading training provider for all types of material handling equipment and workplace transport. Despite being as popular as larger trucks, such as counterbalance and reach, powered pallet movers are often downplayed when it comes to accident risk and the training required to reduce it.

Training for one and all
Stuart Taylor is managing director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, the UK’s leading training provider for all types of materials handling equipment and workplace transport. If you think materials handling equipment (MHE) training only applies to operators, think again. To reduce risk as far as possible, you must ensure that everyone working around forklift trucks understands the dangers, from the managers and supervisors who oversee operations to those working around them on foot.
Lift truck training: don’t forget co-workers
As we see all too often in industry news reports, materials handling operations can be extremely dangerous if proper safety measures are not taken. Indeed, it’s telling that the transportation and storage sector, for instance, which is heavily reliant on materials handling equipment (MHE) use, has significantly higher injury and fatality rates than the UK average.
The gospel according to Peter
There’s an element of formality about meeting someone new in a work context. Peter Kelly, ex HSE senior psychologist and now Mates in Mind’s head of programme, isn’t interested in any of that. “Do you want to do [the interview] in the pub?” he asks cheerily from the off. Kelly is someone who likes to put people at ease, to connect.
Six ways pedestrians can keep safe around forklifts
Stuart Taylor is Managing Director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, the UK’s leading provider of training and associated services for all types of materials handling equipment and workplace transport. Contrary to popular belief, should a forklift accident occur, it is not the person on the truck who is most at risk. Pedestrians in the vicinity have little protection against injury, especially if they don’t understand how to recognise potential risks and keep themselves (and others) safe.

Stuart Taylor is Managing Director of Mentor FLT Training Limited, the UK’s leading provider of training and associated services for all types of materials handling equipment and workplace transport. “This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices.” These are words we read all too often in the UK, quoting inspectors from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after an accident has occurred.
Putting mental wellbeing at the heart of a business | British Safety Council
In the CIPD’s latest health and wellbeing survey, published in October 2021, 37 per cent of respondents said that stress-related absence had increased in the past year, while the ONS reports that 21 per cent of adults experienced some form of depression in early 2021 – more than double the number observed before the pandemic (10 per cent). As well as sickness absence, poor mental health at work can lead to increased staff turnover, reduced engagement and high presenteeism.
The World Benefits When Farmers Are Supported as Entrepreneurs

15 Greatest Album-Opening Songs in Metal
The first song on a band's album is the most important one. It doesn't have to be the best song on the record, the most complicated or the most catchy, but it does carry the integral roles of setting the sonic scene for what's to come and drawing new listeners in. In a genre as intense as metal, picking the right opening song is an especially tough choice. Do you begin with the energy cranked to 11 or do you gradually build up to that point?

Let's share the vaccine fairly and get back to what we love
The world is different. Friends and family are apart, gatherings are on hold, travel has been halted. We all want to get back to the things and the people we love. But if different countries move at different speeds then there is no guarantee that things will ever be the same. We must decide that it’s possible to end the pandemic quickly by supporting the United Nations’ call for vaccines to be treated as a public good, accessible and available to everyone, everywhere.
Whig-Clio and the Stealth Suppression of Free Speech
By Edward Yingling, ’70, and Stuart Taylor, Jr, ’70, co-founders of Princetonians for Free Speech “I believe there are more instances of abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” James Madison in a 1788 speech. The formation of methanol from glycerol bio-waste over doped ceria-based catalysts
1. Introduction The increased research and development in sustainable routes to valuable chemicals largely derived from bio-based feedstock continues unabated. Increased adoption of bio-diesel as a fuel blend has been one area of intensive development; however, a number of other processes have been investigated, such as the production of bio-alcohols [1–3]. The formation of bio-diesel via transesterification of triglycerides with methanol results in the formation of impure glycerol [4].

T. Time: T. Graham Brown takes the stage
TIFTON — T. Graham Brown remembers the first real band he ever heard growing up in Arabi. He was sleeping on the floor next to the window in his parents’ house, something he did on hot nights. A set of railroad tracks ran just past the backyard and across the tracks was a black church. “The first band I ever heard was a black church band across the tracks,” said Brown. That church band combined with his transistor radio to give him a musical education and a view of the world.
