1 Introduction Species within the family Delphinidae are characterised by complex social structures (Mann et al. 2000). While most delphinids form strong social bonds with conspecifics, they occasionally interact with individuals from other species. Such interspecific interactions may lead to the formation of mixed–species groups (Syme et al. 2021) and, more rarely, to hybrid individuals or interspecific adoptive mother–calf pairs.
