What was your first job as a journalist?
When I started interviewing people for content on my website from 2001.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I actually started to learn to type on a manual typewriter before using TypeQuick to learn how to type on a computer.
How is social media changing news?
It is providing a voice to more people and groups and democratising influence in many ways.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Not sure...sorry.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Don't really follow hashtags too much, but I have to say, spelling mistakes really irritate me!
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
There has to be value for my audience - not a sales pitch.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use a Windows PC and an iPhone. I have a MacBook Air laptop when I am out and about.
What's your favorite social network?
LinkedIn - without a doubt! I joined on 21 December 2003 and am member number 77,832!
Who do you wish followed you?
Anyone who would find my writing helpful or inspirational.
Why did you become a journalist?
I am an 'accidental journalist.' After starting my first website online in 2001 (NewcomersNetwork.com), I have been writing ever since.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No - in high school, I took a keen interest in French and Science and always wanted to do research in the future.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I believe it is important to provide practical and useful actionable information in all of my writing (also respectful for all readers)
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Create your own website with your own name and keep a record of all of your publications in any format (and create a Muck Rack Profile!)
When's the best time to pitch you?
Flexible, but don't expect an immediate response!
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I am super fussy, so sadly, not one pitch comes to mind.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I seem to get a lot of 'blog content' emails...so over it.
What's your favorite drink?
Licorice tea - at the moment!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Out walking or doing some form of exercise, or watching The Bold and The Beautiful!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Whatever I find that matches my search effectively on Google. I love scrolling through local daily newspapers.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
For some reason, everyday people think that they are an 'expert' on LinkedIn when they fill in a profile - LinkedIn is so much more!
