A former science educator and biologist, she has a love for animals and spending her time outdoors, especially hiking, snowboarding, and gravel cycling where she lives in Boulder, CO. In southern New Mexico lies the Tularosa Basin, an oblong bowl that’s home to a natural sandbox: White Sands National Park. In 2005, David Bustos came to White Sands to work as a National Park Service biologist. The following year, he took notice of odd animal footprints that would appear only when the ground was wet. (The first of these footprints was reported in the 1930s.) The markings, which would disappear as the earth dried up, became known as ghost tracks.

James Webb Space Telescope prepares for a Christmas launch

In 1946, 12 years before NASA was created, a Yale University astrophysicist published a paper about the advantages of conducting astronomy research from space. A large space telescope would help, the astrophysicist, named Lyman Spitzer, argued. (Little did he know, an infrared space telescope launched in 2003 would be named after him.) Forty-four years later, on April 24, 1990, the space shuttle Discovery launched from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.

Deep neural network ExoMiner helps NASA discover 301 exoplanets

Scientists just added 301 exoplanets to an already confirmed cohort of more than 4,000 worlds outside our solar system. Most exoplanets known to scientists have been discovered by NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, which was retired in October 2018 after nine years of collecting data from deep space.
