A Question Of Decency, Ctd.
“Either we all live in a decent world, or nobody does,” - George Orwell. It’s quite an achievement that after ten years of deepening degeneracy, Donald J Trump still manages to sicken. We’ve had many presidents, all flawed. But we have never had one so staggeringly indecent. It would have been possible, after all, to execute Nidal Hasan as others always have been — only witnessed by the families of victims. But no.

Evan is a former campaign fundraiser and political strategist for Democrats. She just published her first book, Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative, which really blew me away. The Floundering Anglo-American Right
Badenoch misses the moment; Rubio wants a new era of pagan daring. Uh-oh. (Left photo by Ian Forsyth / Right photo by Mark Schiefelbein; both from Getty) Two big speeches this week from two possible future conservative leaders: the British Tory leader, Kemi Badenoch, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She played it safe; he reached for a new synthesis. And both, it seems to me, failed. There was plenty in Badenoch’s annual address to her party conference to warm an old-school Thatcherite heart.
Hansen Super Bad
John Gage, the editor of the Plains Sentinel, has done a great job of exposing the left for what it is. However, in this story (https://plains-sentinel.com/p/omaha-set-to-elect-pro-palestinian) covering Whitney Hansen who is running for Douglas County Board of Commissioners in District 2, he held back on the real red meat of what is wrong with her. In part, I am trying to poke some fun with him because he still refers to social media X as Twitter.

THE AI INVASION OF THE HUMAN SOUL: WHY NEURAL NETWORKS ARE FEASTING ON OUR CREATIVITY For decades, we have been obsessed with a single, cinematic version of the Artificial Intelligence apocalypse. We are terrified of the moment Skynet wakes up, the moment the metal hand curls into a fist, and the machines declare war on their creators. But as this disturbing illustration perfectly captures, we are looking in the wrong direction. The metal hand is not coming to crush us.

The Trials Of An Unpopular Populist
(Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images) You very rarely see President Trump address the nation the way presidents used to. You know the drill: seated at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, talking candidly and intimately to the American people. Trump tried it with Covid in 2020 and it didn’t quite work. Stiff, awkward, rote, interspersed with sniffs, it’s a bit sad in retrospect. He just can’t do intimacy. He can’t do reassurance. His fireside manner has always been gasoline.

The Question Of Decency
“Either we all live in a decent world, or nobody does,” wrote George Orwell. It’s from his essay, “The Lion and the Unicorn,” which was a prose-poem in some ways to the quiet virtues of his native England. It so affected me that I actually remember the moment I was reading it. I was a 13 year old on the top deck of a double-decker bus, the windows opaque with condensation, the air thick with cigarette smoke, the skies dark outside, rain falling steadily, making my way home from school. Decency.

Are The Wheels Finally Falling Off MAGA?
You’d have gone broke betting against the resilience of the Trump phenomenon this past decade. He has survived two impeachments, one insurrection, one plague, one lost election, one incredibly close assassination attempt, several major lawsuits, and the passionate, undying hatred of 40 percent of the country. None of it counted.

The Secret Of Trump's Gaza Triumph
It was the winningest win of them all for the winner of all winners. He took command and now “bestrides the world scene like no other,” gushed Walter Russell Mead. “Only Mr. Trump could have made this happen … No other living politician could have reassured Israel, threatened Hamas and patched together a broad Arab coalition the way he has done.” He’s “the president we’ve been waiting for,” added Pulitzer winner Kathleen Parker this morning.
Charles Murray On Taking Religion Seriously
Charles is a writer, social scientist, and longtime friend. He currently holds the F.A. Hayek Chair Emeritus in Cultural Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. His many books include Losing Ground, The Bell Curve (co-authored with Richard Herrnstein), Coming Apart, Facing Reality, and Human Diversity (which we discussed on the Dishcast in 2021). His new book is Taking Religion Seriously.

Why Bari Weiss Matters
In the peak-woke madness of the Floyd summer, some prominent journalists decided to declare war on the goal of “objectivity.” The conditions of “white supremacy,” as defined by critical race theory, demanded “moral clarity” rather than both-sides fairness, they argued. The myth of balance was, in fact, itself a manifestation of “whiteness.” And so we were subjected to a “paradigm shift” in which news stories became merely daily illustrations of how “white supremacy” operates.

How Utterly Lost Is The Left?
The other day I sat, slack-jawed, reading Kamala Harris’ book — which was not easy to do with my eyeballs permanently rolled into the back of my head. (On one issue that killed her campaign, trans policy, she still hasn’t got the slightest clue what she’s talking about.) At one point, I even tried to imagine what America would be like today if this woke lawyer had actually won last year. Then it occurred to me that we already kind of know.

Someone shot him in the neck. I’ve now watched that video a couple of times, and it’s as unbearable to absorb as the video of the stabbing of a young woman on a train in Charlotte (whose neck was also sliced). Here we see two young people, living freely in a liberal society — one engaging in dialogue on a college campus, the other simply absorbed in her phone.
