The envelope
The days my parents struggled in the Great Depression were only whispers of yesteryear when I was born. By then, mink had replaced wool and the country club societal whirl had captured my parents’ fancy. For them, Christmas was an excuse to lavish each child with a fairyland of unrestrained wants. After opening one gift after another, I would tote my new acquisitions up and down the street so neighbors would know Santa loved me best.
Sensationalism: A One-sided Perspective
Keywords sensationalism, Kingdom of Nauvoo, history Abstract While Benjamin Park shows promise as a writer and historian, his book, Kingdom of Nauvoo, opts for poorly sourced sensationalism instead of illuminating the joy of Nauvoo’s true history. Recommended Citation Black, Susan Easton (2020) "Sensationalism: A One-sided Perspective," Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship: Vol. 38, Article 8. An Exceptional Example of the Richness of Church History
Keywords Joseph Smith, Book of Mormon, Mormon studies, Church of Jesus Christ Abstract Jeffrey Bradshaw has, in a single well-researched volume, provided a gift to those interested in the lives of early Church members. In Emer Harris & Dennison Lott Harris, Bradshaw brings out of obscurity the remarkable life of one of Martin Harris’s brothers and illustrates the contribution of that life to the initial decades of the Restoration.
How Elder and Sister Ballard’s love story was shaped by a sweet but bold gift
Three days after he returned home from his mission, 21-year-old Russ Ballard and a few friends attended the “Hello Day” dance at the University of Utah. The dance was an excuse for the friends to get together, share mission stories, and, if lucky, dance with some young women. It was a friend, Dick Harris, who first spotted a beautiful, blue-eyed blonde sophomore on the dance floor. He wanted Russ to meet her.
‘That sweet and tender missionary experience’: M. Russell Ballard’s service in England
[For the second area of his mission], Elder Ballard learned that he was being transferred to Hucknall, a market town nestled in the Trent Valley just seven miles northwest of Nottingham. The town was certainly not as imposing as Nottingham but was known for its knitting, coal mining, market square, and the St. Mary Magdalene parish church.

The Symbolism of the Beehive in Latter-day Saint Tradition
Notes 1. “In 1609, Charles Butler, an English rector, published in Oxford a book on bees in which he identifies the queen bee as a female. The Feminine Monarchie states, ‘We must not call the Queen “Rex,” the Bee-state is an Amazonian or feminine kingdom.’ Yet, coming at the end of Queen Elizabeth’s long reign, this did not detract from the monarchial implications of the bee symbol.” J.

8 LDS Women Who Made Their Mark in U.S. Politics
In this past general conference, President M. Russell Ballard encouraged that “Church members—both men and women—should not hesitate, if they desire, to run for public office at any level of government wherever they live.” He continued, “Our voices are essential today and important in our schools, our cities, and our countries” (“Precious Gifts from God,” general conference, April 2018).
8 LDS Women Who Shaped Hollywood, Fashion + More by Standing for Their Faith
Throughout history, the arts have been greatly benefited by women—including LDS women. While there are many women whom we could recognize, here are eight who have stood firm in their beliefs as they followed their passions. The following is adapted from Susan Easton Black and Mary Jane Woodger’s book Women of Character: Profiles of 100 Prominent LDS Women. Edwina Boot h—the stage name of Josephine Constance Woodruff—was a leading actress of the early “talkie” period.

A survey launched to get a feel for how people perceive Bognor Regis and how it could be improved has thrown up some interesting replies. The imaginative survey asked questions such as ‘Why is the town better than other places?’, ‘If it was a celebrity who would it be?’, and ‘What would be the catalyst for its renaissance?’ Responses to the question, ‘If Bognor Regis was a consumer brand, what would it be?’ included; ‘Horlicks. Cosy and warm, but a bit old-fashioned’ and ‘Heinz Baked Beans.
Meet the Man Behind the Charity T...
“When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.” – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Here’s an interesting statistic. Every year, around 13,500 people come to London seeking asylum. In the same period, almost exactly twice that number of bikes – just over 27,000 – are left abandoned on the streets of the capital.
My most influential teacher
The first day of class began much the same as any other at Brigham Young University — students hurried into the classroom to find a seat and meet their friends. As usual I took a seat in the back of the class. Professor Milton V. Backman Jr. entered a few minutes later. He was a tall, gangly man wearing a checkered coat that had gone out of style at least a decade before. He began his lecture with something about grades determined by tests and a term paper.

What’s the biggest turning point in your career and how did that lead you to what you are doing today?

Getting started in open source through a high school student help desk
I was the first young woman to join the Penn Manor High School Student Help Desk, an independent study course where we learn about software, hardware, technical support, and customer service skills. Every day, we help our classmates when they have issues with their school laptops. I joined in the spring of 2015, but I feel like I've been here forever. From a young age, I was interested in technology. Thanks to my older brothers, my curiosity was encouraged and sometimes satisfied by their answers.
