Abstract The neurogenic period, where neural stem cells (NSCs) proliferate to produce molecularly distinct progeny in the developing brain, is a critical time of growth in many organisms. Proper brain development is crucial for survival and requires strict regulation of NSC divisions along a set developmental timeline. In Drosophila NSCs known as neuroblasts (NBs), cell intrinsic programs integrate with extrinsic cues to control periods of rapid growth through temporal patterning genes.

Abstract It is increasingly important to understand animal migratory movements because climate disruption is shifting plant and animal phenology at different rates across the world. We applied a Markov state-switching model to telemetry data of a long-distance migrant, the barnacle goose, to detect migratory movement and relate it to three proximate environmental factors: photoperiod, daily mean temperature and forage plant phenology.

My Turn: What I learned from my son's night in jail
My Turn: My son is 25 but has the brain of an 8-year-old. That worked against him in an altercation with police. My 25-year-old son was arrested recently and spent the night in Phoenix's Fourth Avenue Jail. I know what people are thinking: Why on earth would anyone share something like that? I agree. It is particularly unusual for someone like me who believes that over-sharing has reached a new high (or should I say low?).
