U.S. Must Cut Off Chinese Firms That Profit From Stolen American AI
The evidence of Chinese intellectual property theft emerged in federal court, but the U.S. government turned to sanctions to punish the companies that received the illicit files. On October 19, the State Department sanctioned five China-based entities connected to Linwei Ding, the former Google engineer convicted by a federal jury in January of stealing more than 1,000 files on Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) hardware and software infrastructure.
Europe’s Hardening Stance Against China Is Washington’s Opportunity
Europe is beginning to confront the economic costs of China’s market-distorting practices in earnest. On October 7, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to adopt a much tougher stance on China. The position calls Beijing’s industrial policies “an existential threat to the EU” and urges the European Union to “proactively and assertively” use its trade toolbox alongside “like-minded partners,” including the United States.
Yes, China’s State-Owned Shipping Giant Is Spying on the United States
COSCO’s cover is blown. On September 1, Reuters reported that the Chinese state-owned shipping giant — one of the largest maritime services companies in the world — uses equipment concealed aboard its ships to spy on military communications near the coastlines of target nations, including the United States. The company has denied the claims.

US and Canada brawl over hockey sticks — so China skates off with big trade wins Original
It’s like a fistfight between conjoined twins: The United States and Canada are throwing tariffs and insults at each other tit-for-tat in one of the most unnecessary trade wars in recent memory. “I don’t want Canadian cars. I don’t want Canadian parts. I don’t want Canadian anything,” President Donald Trump posted Sunday, before comparing the tariffs on Canada to his administration’s war against Iran.
Taiwan’s Chip Smuggling Case Shows Promise for Allied Export Control Enforcement
In a world of globalized supply chains, enforcing export controls is also a globalized effort. On August 24, Taiwan charged nine individuals in a scheme to smuggle Super Micro servers containing Nvidia AI chips to China. The servers were shipped to Taiwanese subsidiaries ostensibly for domestic use, then diverted to China, both directly and transshipped through Japan, Hong Kong, or Indonesia. However, while this action violated U.S. export restrictions, it did not violate Taiwan’s.
New White House Report Brings ‘Shadow Transshipment Network’ Into Spotlight
To prevail in a trade war against China, the United States needs enforcement tools that match its trade policy goals. On August 13, the White House released a report accusing more than 40 countries of participating in a “global Shadow Transshipment Network.” Alongside a June executive order strengthening customs enforcement, the report demonstrates the Trump administration’s expanding focus on enforcing, not just erecting, trade barriers.
China Rejects Overproduction Allegations Amidst Greater Trade Scrutiny
Beijing is laying the groundwork for Paramount Leader Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to Washington. On July 30, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with high-level Chinese representatives. China used the meeting to voice “serious concern” over new trade restrictions — including Washington’s Section 301 investigations into China’s unfair trade practices and the European Union’s October deadline to reduce its unsustainable trade balance with Beijing.
Sanctioning DR Congo’s Blood Gold Is Smart, but Not Enough
The east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is now at the center of the U.S.-China critical mineral conflict. On June 25, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned a network based in the Rwandan capital of Kigali moving gold from eastern DRC on behalf of the Rwandan-backed M23 militia.
US must halt the terror-driven gold rush that’s looting Venezuela
A human-rights horror is unfolding right under America’s nose, with kids under age 10 laboring in mines, girls as young as 12 working in brothels and whole communities fleeing cartel violence. Venezuela is at the evil heart of an illicit gold-mining rush that’s enriching US enemies like the Tren de Aragua cartel, the terror group Hezbollah and others. It’s the new El Dorado, run by cartels, enslaving children and fueling terror.

Trump Signs Executive Order Addressing Structural Gaps in Trade Enforcement
High tariffs create strong incentives to evade them. More than 40 percent of textile shipments flagged for analysis by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were either “mis-declared or mis-described” on entry. If the problem was already acute in textiles, the stakes are much greater for semiconductors, critical minerals, and dual-use technologies.
China Introduces New Outbound Investment Laws To Prevent U.S. Decoupling
After decades of courting foreign investment, Beijing is now working to stop the flow of funds going the other way. On June 1, China’s State Council published new rules tightening control over outbound investment in key sectors, including artificial intelligence (AI) and national security-related technologies. These new regulations follow the release of laws to secure critical supply chains and banning AI workers from leaving the country.
Price Fixing Indictment of Chinese Companies Underlines U.S. Vulnerability to China’s Monopolization of Maritime Industries
In the 1950s, the United States invented the shipping container, revolutionizing global trade. Today, China makes almost all of them — and just got caught fixing the price. On May 19, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) indicted four of the world’s largest container manufacturing companies and seven executives — all Chinese — for a “global conspiracy” to fix prices and restrict output of nearly all the world’s standard dry shipping containers.
Gears of National Economic Power
Trade tools Trade policies — like tariffs, free trade agreements, and free trade zone legislation — use access to the United States’s powerful economy as a form of leverage. A wide range of Executive Branch agencies exercise power over trade, and Congress’s power over treaties, regulation of commerce, and legislation also give it significant authority over this engine of economic power. The U.S. economy is the largest in the world and the United States is the world’s leading importer.
Iranian-Linked Militias in Iraq Threaten U.S. Dollar Flows to the Baghdad Government
The United States has been flying cash — around $400-$500 million at a time — to Baghdad for decades. However, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the U.S. Treasury had partially suspended dollar shipments tied to Iraq’s oil exports until Baghdad cracks down on Iranian-linked militias. Since the outbreak of the Iran War in late February, Iran-aligned militias have carried out hundreds of drone and rocket attacks on U.S. targets across Iraq, including the embassy in Baghdad.

America can bankrupt Iran’s insiders — And it should
Tens of billions of dollars have been siphoned out of the Iranian economy by the Islamic Republic’s insiders over the past decade. If the U.S. wasn’t watching then, it is now. “We now know where the Iranian leadership bank accounts are, and those are being frozen,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday. His message is the right one: America can bankrupt Iran’s elite, undermining their loyalty to Mojtaba Khamenei and his cronies.
Forging a New Critical Minerals Reality
I. Introduction Secure critical minerals supply chains are essential to American safety and prosperity. Minerals such as rare earth elements, lithium, cobalt, graphite, and gallium underpin advanced weapons systems, semiconductors, energy infrastructure, and next-generation technologies. Yet global supply chains for these materials remain heavily concentrated in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), particularly at the processing and refining stages, where strategic leverage is greatest.
Strengthening Transparency, Eligibility, and Jurisdictional Scope in Investment Reviews
I. Introduction The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) welcomes the Department of the Treasury’s efforts to develop a Known Investor Program intended to streamline CFIUS review for trusted foreign investors while preserving the committee’s ability to address national security risks.
Trump Administration Scores Major Victory as Panama Supreme Court Rules Against Chinese Shipping Firm
The Danish shipping behemoth Maersk is now temporarily managing two ports along the Panama Canal after the Panamanian Supreme Court annulled a Chinese company’s contracts on constitutional grounds. The court’s January 29 decision to cancel the contracts with Chinese shipping magnate CK Hutchison marked an important victory for President Donald Trump’s bid to roll back Beijing’s dominance of the global maritime industry.
Iran Fuels Repression in Myanmar
Fuel shipments linked to Iran are helping Myanmar’s military regime to intensify air strikes on civilians trapped in the civil war that has raged since it seized power in a coup five years ago. According to a January 26 report, Iranian shadow fleet tankers have been covertly delivering jet fuel to Myanmar’s military since at least October 2024. This has coincided with a sharp increase in aerial bombardments against civilian areas across the country.
Canada’s Bet on Beijing Puts USMCA at Risk
Does Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney really consider China to be a “more predictable” partner than the United States? During a visit to Beijing last week, Carney unveiled a “new strategic partnership” between the two nations that could be detrimental to U.S.-Canada relations. It could also jeopardize the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) renegotiations slated for July.
New Mexican Tariffs Strike a Blow Against China
Mexico is picking a side in the U.S.-China trade war. On December 10, the country’s congress voted to authorize tariffs of up to 50 percent on imports from China in a significant escalation of its existing tariff policy. The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, is expected to sign the bill in January.

SOS — Save Our Shipping: Trump must break China’s chokehold on global trade Original
A high-stakes deal that would give an American company a major role in running dozens of strategically crucial global ports is now in limbo — as China aggressively demands a stake. The United States cannot let that happen. US asset manager BlackRock and its partners are vying for 43 of the world’s most important shipping ports, including the two that straddle the Panama Canal.
