The Japanese Footbridge | Painting, Claude Monet, Giverny, Water Lily Pond, 1920, & Facts
The Japanese Footbridge, oil-on-canvas painting by Claude Monet of the Japanese-style footbridge that was the focal point of his garden at Giverny, France. The structure was one of his favorite subjects, and he painted it over and over again, catching it in different moods and lights. Unlike the more familiar paintings of the bridge where the overpass is clearly delineated and the colors are made up of lush greens and soft pinks, this piece is notable for its blurry forms and red tones.
Prismes Électriques | History, Description, & Facts
Prismes Électriques, Orphist oil painting created in 1914 by Russian-born artist Sonia Delaunay. This painting is an icon of the full and mature expression of Orphism. Delaunay was born in Gradizhsk, Ukraine (then in the Russian Empire) and grew up in St. Petersburg before moving to Paris in 1905, where she met and married Robert Delaunay in 1910.
The Moroccan City Henri Matisse Called a “Painter’s Paradise”
Europe’s gateway to Africa, Tangier has long attracted artists and writers. The light is distinctive in Tangier. At dawn, it pierces through the early morning mist; at midday, it splinters into shafts of light; the golden sunset transforms everything into glowing embers; and at night, silver studs punctuate the deep velvet sky. Just before sunrise, the call to morning prayer echoes from numerous towers across the city, rising in volume before darkness melts into day.

In her new book Painting Masterclass: Creative Techniques of 100 Great Artists, author Susie Hodge investigates the artistic processes behind celebrated paintings of art history. Looking at such famous works as Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas (ca. 1656) and Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665), Hodge examines the techniques behind these works and the lessons their makers can still teach us today. Below, we share excerpts, delving into the works of five iconic artists.
The Simple Art Supplies You Need to Begin Drawing
Artists Ian Sidaway and Susie Hodge share fundamental drawing techniques and exercises in their new book, How to Draw: A Comprehensive Drawing Course: Still Life, Landscapes, Buildings, People, and Portraits. Below, we share an excerpt from the book’s overview of art materials and tools for getting started and growing your drawing practice. The materials needed to begin drawing are simple: a tool with which to make a mark and a sheet of paper on which to make it.
MODERN ART MAYHEM
Get ready for a fast-paced art-themed scavenger hunt in which a tousle-haired white preteen follows clues back and forth throughout the book. The premise is that the gallery owner falls sick and puts the young protagonist, addressed as “you” throughout, in charge. “Your” job is to keep the collection safe, answer questions about paintings, mount an exhibition, and foil a robbery attempt by a rival gallery owner. The narrative on each page poses a question with three possible answers.
The hidden details in art's masterpieces
However, many of the world's most renowned works come loaded with underlying messages and back stories. Artists use specialized techniques and subtle symbolism to hint at larger themes, expand on a narrative or -- in some cases -- add a touch of humor. "Looking at any work of art is a personal experience," Hodge writes, "but one that always benefits from a wider knowledge and awareness.
