We may even have ignored Melania’s dominatrix Mary Poppins ensemble, complete with don’t-look-at-me hat, under which she hid her cold, dead eyes. But what we could not ignore was Elon Musk seig heiling. Twice, a Nazi salute, for all the world to see. Unambiguous, undisguised, unmistakable. In front of the whole world. Fair enough.

When Glenn Close says “I’m not going to be ignored” in 1987’s Fatal Attraction, before boiling Michael Douglas’s bunny, she could have been speaking for this generation of women. Glenn Close was 40 making the film. Her character – Alex – gives her age as 36 (older playing younger was definitely a bold decision for the time), but the movie narrative clearly imagines her as a woman ‘of a certain age’ – and therefore subject to the then-usual series of stereotypes.
