Introduction Continuity of care is widely considered to be an essential component of primary health care.

Method Prior to commencing this review, a study protocol was developed and registered with PROSPERO (reference number: CRD42023476099). A systematic literature review that adhered to the PRISMA reporting guidelines was conducted.8 The inclusion criteria were formulated using the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO)/patient, exposure, comparison, outcome (PECO) structure.9 The population had to be an ordinary primary care population, and not be restricted by diagnosis or age.
