The LCD is driven by an RP2040 microcontroller, which translates the RGB output from the GBC into something that the LCD can understand. The biggest hurdle is getting it to read cartridges, since it's smaller and the cartridge slot cannot fit into the final design because it is too long. He went and produced custom boards that attach to an M.2 slot; they have the same signal layout but are much smaller to fit flush with the case.
