Pathogen‐reduced platelet concentrates in France: Impact on the risk of transfusion‐transmitted infections, 2017-2024
After inclusion of two additional years of surveillance data, the reduction in platelet concentrate (PC)–related transfusion-transmitted bacterial infections (TTBIs) associated with pathogen reduction implementation in France is confirmed. The recent occurrence of two severe TTBIs with pathogen-reduced PC, however, highlights a persistent bacterial infectious risk.

Multiple HBV transfusion transmissions from undetected occult infections: revising the minimal infectious dose
Objective HBV infection by blood components is currently prevented in most developed countries by combining sensitive HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) assays, nucleic acid testing (NAT) and in a few of them antibodies against the HBV core antigen (anti-HBc) screening. HBV transmissions by blood components from three repeat donors tested negative for HBsAg and HBV DNA with a highly sensitive screening test (limit of detection (LOD): 3.4 IU/mL) were investigated.
Presence of Human Hepegivirus-1 in a Cohort of People Who Inject Drugs
Kandathil and colleagues' study ( 1 ) showed a high prevalence (10.9%) of the novel RNA virus HHpgV-1 (also reported as human pegivirus-2 [HPgV-2]) in injection drug users, whereas the prevalence in HCV-infected U.S. blood donors was only approximately 1% ( 1–3 ).
