Bali Ha'i and South Pacific Are Calling at Theatre Under the Stars
Director Taibi Magar tends to do a lot of newer, experimental plays. But when Theatre Under the Stars Artistic Director Dan Knechtges approached her about doing South Pacific, she readily said yes. "It's my mother's favorite musical. She's the reason I'm in theater. She introduced me to the world of theater. She likes a lot of musicals but South Pacific is her favorite," said Magar (Spring Awakening).
Gregg Daniel Stars As An FBI Informant In Solo Piece THE DUAT
Actor and Stage Director, Gregg Daniel performs in "The Duat," written by Roger Q. Mason, directed by Taibi Magar, and featuring percussionist David Leach. Review: Marin Ireland Brings Down the Halfway House in ‘Blue Ridge’
Image Marin Ireland in Abby Rosebrock’s “Blue Ridge.” Even when she’s sitting still — which admittedly is a rare occurrence — Alison is a gale-force presence. Portrayed by the never disappointing Marin Ireland in Abby Rosebrock’s “Blue Ridge,” the emotionally congested play that opened Monday night at the Linda Gross Theater, this disgraced high-school English teacher is one of those unsettling people who suck up all the oxygen in a room in one convulsive gulp.
Laughter turns to tears in Guthrie Theater drama by 'Black Panther' star Danai Gurira
It’s the trickiest sort of stage navigation — going from broad, side-splitting comedy to sensitive drama that tugs at the tear ducts. And it’s a feat accomplished with style by the nimble cast and artful director of “Familiar,” the play by Danai Gurira that had its regional premiere Friday at the Guthrie Theater.
Review: ‘Is God Is’ Reinvents the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Neither is Ms. Harris, or not entirely. Directed with imaginative economy by Taibi Magar (who oversaw the similarly and splendidly transgressive “Underground Railroad Game”), “Is God Is” may be pitched in a key of absurd exaggeration. Not for nothing is the curtain raiser a loop from a horror-themed “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” cartoon (the one with the mummy), shown on a staticky TV set.
Guthrie delivers historical gut punch with Jackie Sibblies Drury's 'Proud to Present'
There are no escape hatches for actors or audience members in Jackie Sibblies Drury's mouthful of a one-act: "We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as Southwest Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915." The psychologically gnarly show, now up in Taibi Magar's gripping three-quarter round production at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, leaves you sitting hard on your seat until the end, unsure of what to do.
