Our 10 responsibilities as journalists covering a war on information - comment
Journalism can also function as a platform for advocating social change by highlighting underreported issues, amplifying marginalized voices, and pressuring for policy reform. The war we are facing today is unlike any other, except perhaps the Ukraine-Russia War. It’s not because of the tanks, bombs, guns, or drones; it’s not because of tunnels or terror attacks or antisemitism or Islamophobia. It is because of the war on information.

With friends like these: Israel is collateral damage in Trump's trade war on the world - comment
The Jerusalem Post Economics and Domestic Affairs correspondent, Eve Young, is a good friend of mine. As I began to write my column for this issue of the Report, she rubbed her forehead in concern – and I understand why. US President Donald Trump announced late last month that he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all trade partners, with additional duties for many countries, which includes 17% tariffs on Israeli goods. Many were shocked, but I cannot say that I was.
How Netanyahu deflects blame while manipulating Israel into trusting him - comment
Even before the recent war broke out, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was doing everything in his power to deflect blame for even the most minor of conflicts, whether it was justified or not. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is playing defense, and he has been doing so for a long, long time. Even before the recent war broke out, Netanyahu was doing everything in his power to deflect blame for even the most minor of conflicts, whether it was justified or not.
Freedom forgone: The concerning rise of censorship in Israel - comment
What justification would we have as a humanitarian society if we did not preserve the rights of those we disagree with just because we disagree with them? As a media organization, freedom of speech is a must for us. It is the foundation of how we operate. It is the ground upon which we stand. It is the essence of the ink on our pages. Freedom of speech comes with limitations and responsibilities.

Tamar Uriel-Beeri on the need for news to give voice to the voiceless

Israel must recognize the Armenian Genocide now more than ever

Will the good times last? Jerusalem Report's new editor-in-chief on the Gaza ceasefire - comment
In the time since our last issue of the Report reached our readers’ doorsteps, a ceasefire and hostage deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas. It is a strange sensation, writing my first ever column as editor-in-chief of this distinguished publication. Many have told me I have big shoes to fill, but they have not been the ones day in and day out coming into the office, only finding that Steve Linde was there before them, hard at work. Believe me, I know I have big shoes to fill.
Sara Netanyahu demands recognition as flare attack victim despite not being home
Sara Netanyahu’s lawyer has asked the court to recognize the prime minister’s wife as a victim of a naval flare attack in the investigation into the shooting at the prime minister’s home in Caesarea. She was not present at the time of the incident. In his appeal to the court, Uriel Nizri, the family’s lawyer, claimed that Sara is entitled to the status of a victim of a crime per the provisions of the Victims of Crime Rights Law. Four suspects, including Brig.-Gen.
Reporter's notebook: Young families huddle together in too-tight bomb shelter
The rocket sirens began just as I entered the front door of my building, and every cell in my body was filled with the very essence of fear. My lungs were in my throat as I ran up the stairs in my building at a speed most would consider impressive on three-inch heels. A young man I ran by called out, "Where are you going? The bomb shelter's downstairs." I simply yelled back from the upper landing, "My son." They say mothers can accomplish some incredible feats in a burst of adrenaline.
No. 6: Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin: Parents fighting to free Hamas's hostages
Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin spent the duration for the war not just advocating for the release of their son Hersh, who was murdered in Hamas captivity, but all those abducted on October 7. “I love you” and “I’m sorry.” Those were the final words Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin heard – actually, read – from their son, Hersh, on October 7.
Oct. 7 commemoration debacle highlights Israel’s fracture lines - comment
There is no unity. Therefore, no ceremony represents us as a whole. We are a fractured nation being further divided by the controversial government. The first anniversary of the October 7 massacre is upon us, and along with it comes the no-matter-what controversial task of deciding how it is to be honored. No matter what, because the nation is not united; it is further apart than ever before. And no matter what is done, at least one side will be upset and one side will be pleased.
Israel needs to get it together before the UN resolution has consequences - comment
The Broad Perspective: A UN decision that creates animosity toward Israel is something to dread – and even fear – not scoff at and turn the other cheek. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday passed a resolution by a vote of 124 to 14 with 43 abstentions denying Israel’s right to self-defense against terrorism in the West Bank, Gaza, and east Jerusalem.
Experiencing a 'real, authentic' hotel in Holy Land's capital
Walking through the arched entryway to the cozy lobby of the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem is like stepping into another time. That was precisely the feeling I had when I came to review this hotel. Old Jerusalem stone was as far as the eye can see – and not the Jerusalem stone in modern-day local buildings, all freshly chiseled and smooth, but aged, textured, and filled with personality. Those stones are a perfect microcosm of the hotel itself.

Unity isn't the priority. Balanced, truthful reporting is - comment
Journalism's role in wartime sparks debate: Should media portray national unity or reflect societal divisions? Truth-telling and accountability remain crucial, even in crisis. There is an unspoken rule that journalists should not address their audience. This includes the language we use in articles, of course. We cannot say “you” in an article, speaking to our readers. But it also means responding to the commentary we inevitably and consistently receive. This article is breaking that big rule.

‘Are you happy, Bibi?’ Hostage’s father bashes PM for management of war
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu keeps on saying what will not bring about a hostage deal but will not say what is necessary to make a hostage deal happen, according to Eli Elbag, father of Liri Elbag, one of the IDF observation soldiers taken hostage on October 7. Elbag, speaking to Channel 12 News at the mass protests in Tel Aviv that swept over the country on Monday after six hostage bodies were found in the Gaza Strip less than a week after being murdered by Hamas.
Netanyahu, you have lost the trust of Israel. We have no reason to believe you now - comment

Sde Teiman riots: Threatening the checks and balances key to our survival - comment
The Broad Perspective: It is shameful to see representatives of this ultra-right-wing coalition take part in such violent, heinous riots to defend criminals. The panic surrounding Sde Teiman has brought forth a question that has once more divided Israeli society: Must we punish representatives of Israel’s defense systems who have committed crimes against security prisoners – in other words, terrorists?

Netanyahu’s speech to the Israeli public was 20 minutes of nothing - comment
The Broad Perspective: Netanyahu’s speech fell far short of essential leadership qualities, displaying once more just how unfit he is to lead the country. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a brilliant opportunity to actually say something about the war in a 20-minute address on Wednesday night. He could have said, discussing recent high-level assassinations, that the government perceives a definitive success in the war and now is the time to move forward in ceasefire negotiations.

President Biden withdrew from the elections, endorsing Kamala Harris, while reaffirming his strong, consistent support for Israel throughout his tenure. It came as little to no surprise to anyone when US President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the upcoming elections and instead endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
Israel must abolish the time limit for reporting sexual assault - comment
The Broad Perspective: Ending the statute of limitations for sexual offenses, especially against minors, is an essential reform that Israel must adopt. Israel made a commendable stride in the right direction on Wednesday when the Knesset approved MK Merav Michaeli’s bill to expand free legal aid to victims of sexual assault in a preliminary reading.
CrowdStrike collapse: Israel’s health, management systems in a frenzy
A worldwide CrowdStrike system error has led to massive failures on Windows systems, and Israel is not left out. Hospitals, mailrooms, ports, and shopping centers have been forced to halt or alter operations. CrowdStrike is an American cybersecurity technology company that provides penetration workload and endpoint security, threat intelligence, and cyberattack services. The issue allegedly occurred because of an error in a recent system update.

Israel cannot win the war on military strength alone, it’s time for a deal - comment
The Broad Perspective: While military efforts have made some progress, they must be complemented by diplomatic efforts to achieve comprehensive and sustainable outcomes. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant made a—pardon the pun—gallant proclamation this Wednesday: that 60% of Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip have been killed or wounded as a result of Israel’s operation in Gaza. “We killed or wounded 60% of Hamas terrorists,” he announced.

The Advisory Committee on Senior Civil Service Appointments in Israel, led by former High Court of Justice president Asher Grunis, is set to meet this Thursday. On the agenda is a discussion to decide on the appointment of Avshalom Peled as the new Israel Police commissioner.
