1 INTRODUCTION Several applications require accurate historical precipitation values: for example, calculating the Earth water cycle budget, estimating trends in hydrometeorological extremes, verifying weather forecasts and evaluating weather and climate simulations (Beck et al., 2017b; Hossain & Huffman, 2008; Nissen & Ulbrich, 2017; Trenberth, 2011).
