Tania Ortiz’s Biography

Tania Ortiz is a journalist from Oceanside, California. She is a reporter for Lookout Santa Cruz, covering Santa Cruz’s south county, via the California Local News Fellowship program. Ortiz earned her master’s degree in journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. There, she was a Newhouse Diversity News Fellow and interned for Syracuse.com. Ortiz also is a Pulitzer Center grantee. She covered feminist collectives in Mexico and their efforts to support families of femicide victims.

Before studying at Newhouse, Tania served as editor-in-chief of the Cougar Chronicle--the student-led newspaper at California State University San Marcos. There, she helped revitalize its print edition following the Covid-19 pandemic. Ortiz has bylines in local and collegiate publications, such as the NewsHouse, Jerk Magazine, The South Side Stand, Charleston City Paper and the Los Angeles Journal.
