Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Early detection is essential for implementing preventative measures that can slow or stop the progression of late AMD. This study evaluates the performance of an AI-based system designed to detect referable AMD, defined as more than early AMD (mteAMD), in adults over 50 who have not been previously diagnosed.

L. A. Paul, in her paper “What You Can’t Expect When You’re Expecting” (2015), presents a striking claim: deciding whether to have a child, or not, cannot be rational if we base it on what we think it will be like. She describes having a child as an epistemically transformative experience, so unique that we cannot know its value until we experience it (Paul, 2015, p. 154). I find her argument thought-provoking, but I disagree with her conclusion.

Picture this: A massive country of 1.4 billion people, armed with nuclear weapons, a million-strong military, and an economy growing at breakneck speed, living right next door to a much smaller nation still finding its footing in the world. That’s the reality of India and Bangladesh, and it’s a relationship that fascinates me because it reveals so much about how power works in our world. Since gaining independence in 1947, India hasn’t been shy about flexing its muscles in South Asia.
