How is social media changing news?
How we circulate the news and interact with readership on social media. It's 24/7, and you will never make everyone happy.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To never stop asking questions. Your ethics, integrity, and craft is always evolving. It's never definitive.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I like cold emails because that's how I started with outlets. Be personable, detailed, and concise.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I freelance I have limited resources + greater autonomy. I use Twitter, LinkedIn, Protonmail, Pixteller, Word, Wordpress, Zoom, Keybase, etc.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter and LinkedIn. I don't have Facebook. I rarely use Instagram.
Who do you wish followed you?
I feel lucky on Twitter with my media list and to connect with many networks but I wish Sam Harris followed me.
Why did you become a journalist?
It was accidental. I wrote a cold email not thinking an editor would reply from VICE.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. My first media appearance happened at 17 for my hometown newspaper. I was interviewed on how highschool girls can deal with bullying.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My first story covering homeless university students. It's a beat I'm proud of. I often get rejected. We need to document success stories.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Do not go to journalism school. The internet is wonderful. You don't need contacts. You need to commit, bring your own style, and pitch.
What's your favorite drink?
I love tea
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In nature, outside, gym, or cafe. I work with three computers in film. It's essential I get away from screens.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Wall Street Journal, NY Times, WIRED, The Guardian, Bloomberg, The Cut, CoinDesk, etc. I try to read less mainstream outlets also.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I often have to work with pseudonyms so I can write on topics that are under-reported. Creating trust with communities is a priority.
