Meet the People Who’ve Made Orange County a Worldwide Center of UFO Research
It was early August in 1965 and business as usual for Traffic Inspector Tech 2 at the Orange County Road Department. Overgrown foliage on street signs had brought Rex E. Heflin to Myford Road, near the intersection of Walnut Avenue in Santa Ana. He was driving northeast in a Ford work van, less than half a mile from Interstate 5, when his work radio suddenly went out. Heflin fiddled with the radio, attempting to contact Orange County Road Maintenance headquarters.
The Story of a Man Sent to Coachella Jail
We told you earlier about the ways folks try to sneak drugs into Coachella. Also, we told you about how to avoid trouble with the police. But what if, despite your best efforts, you're arrested? Or even taken to Coachella jail? Yes, it is a real place. We got the story on it from a guy we'll call Derek, who was arrested for possession of pot and cocaine in 2009. It went down like this: Continue Reading It was 2 pm on the festival's first day that year, but Derek hadn't made it in yet.
Orange County’s Scariest People of 2018
1 & 2) GENE HERNANDEZ & SUSAN TULLY Back in April, Yorba Linda Mayor Gene Hernandez chummed it up over the phone with Susan Tully, national field director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a noted hate group. Tully previously emailed council members to invite them to join Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ lawsuit against California’s “Sanctuary State” laws, which the city did.
Arsenio Hall is Far From “Semmi” Hilarious
Ali Lerman (age 13): When I have a son I’m going to name him Semmi after Arsenio from Coming to America. Ali Lerman (age 15): Asks for a VCR for Hanukkah so I can tape The Arsenio Hall Show because my parents make me turn off the TV at 11pm.

Anaheim Police Arrest Man Suspected of Stabby Murder Outside Strip Mall
When Anaheim police arrived to a strip mall shortly after midnight on Tuesday, they found Raymond Tovar suffering from a stab wound that proved fatal. Making quick work, investigators from the crime task force arrested suspected murderer Daniel Perez outside a Stanton motel yesterday. It’s unclear if the stabbing happened at the Bel Air Center strip mall in West Anaheim on the corner of N. Bel Air Street and Lincoln Avenue.
DPR Live’s Coming To You Live Tour Brought K-Pop Fanatics to The Novo
The Novo in Los Angeles has become a staple venue for emerging K-pop acts that have a substantial following. But last Friday night, it wasn’t a group of singers dancing to intricate choreographies in shiny outfits that sold out the venue, but rapper Live from the Korean collective DPR. Just across the street, two of the biggest hip-hop acts in the U.S. were entertaining thousands at the Staples Center.
Did Deputy Falsify Incident Report to Justify Beating Man Unconscious?
An Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy “committed a brutal act of excessive force” against an unarmed citizen 17 minutes before a mid-August sunrise and “then filed a false police report to justify” unnecessary violence, according to court records filed today. The allegation focuses on deputy Michael Devitt, who approached Mohamed Zahangir Sayem as the 33-year-old man slept in a black, 2016 Jeep Wrangler parked near the Corner Pocket Bar in Stanton.
Jacks [Savage Love]
I have a secret: For the past three months, I’ve been attending a local Jacks club (a men-only masturbation event). As someone recovering from sexual abuse, I find the party to be safe, therapeutic and just sexy fun. I feel like I need this! Unfortunately, I spotted one of my employees at last week’s event. Although I’m openly gay at my workplace, being naked, erect and sexual in the same room as my employee felt wrong. I freaked out, packed up and departed without him seeing me (I hope).
Killer Hair [Special Screenings, Oct. 18-25]
Ouija: Origin of Evil. The Thursday Matinee film series, whose theme this month is “New Horror Classics,” continues with Mike Flanagan’s 2016 mystery-horror thriller. In 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother (Elizabeth Reaser) unwittingly invites evil into her home by adding a new stunt to bolster her sance scam business. You are invited to wittingly bring snacks and beverages to this screening, but including booze will unleash unspeakable evil. Fullerton Public Library, Osborne Auditorium, 353 W.
Cypress Hill Return with Psychedelic New Album and North American Tour
Eight long years have passed since Cypress Hill lit up your radios with a new album. The wait is finally over as the group released Elephants on Acid last week, their ninth full-length project. Consisting of B-Real, Sen Dog, Eric Bobo, and DJ Muggs, the group’s new single and accompanying video “Band of Gypsies” takes you on a spiritual and literal high through the Middle East.
Anaheim Fall Festival & Halloween Parade Began As a Way to Curb Halloween-Night Mischief
Damn kids! The annual Anaheim Fall Festival & Halloween Parade began in 1924 as a response to the midnight mayhem brewed up by kids on what was known as mischief night almost a century ago in Orange County. “Halloween wasn’t this trick-or-treat holiday we know today,” explains co-organizer Kevin Kidney in a promotional video for the annual festival he helped bring back from the grave with his partner Jody Daily and a team of local volunteers.
Fullerton’s Hunt Branch Library Awaits Its Next Chapter
Imagine reading alongside a Rembrandt, researching in the shadow of sculptures by Rodin, and paying fines beside a Picasso. Such scenes were commonplace along Fullerton’s Commonwealth Avenue in the 1960s. The Hunt Branch Library in Fullerton served not only as a library, but also as a community center and fine-art museum thanks to a generous gift to the city from Norton Simon, a name now synonymous with a world-class fine-art collection because of his eponymous museum in Pasadena.
The Bookman Used Book Store in Orange’s Move Delayed, but Will Happen, Folks!
We’ve got a state-of-the-Bookman Book Store update hot off the old Gutenberg for you, bookworms! The beloved used bookstore which has supplied Orange County with a bevy of books of all flavors and tastes since the days of the first Bush administration has moved from it’s original location on Tustin Avenue in Orange after falling on the wrong side of some long-term lease legalese.
Disneyland’s Endless Summer of Tiki Continues On With New Tiki Restaurant News
The “Summer of Tiki” is shaping up to be a fall and winter of tiki here in Orange County as Disney Parks announced Wednesday their plans to revamp the Tangaroa Terrace at the Disneyland Hotel. The South Seas themed fast-casual restaurant has served as an afterthought next door to Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar–the Disneyland Resort’s behemoth tiki bar that is consistently overflowing with tourists and tikiphiles–since it opened in 2011.
Paul Frank is Still Your Friend, Orange County
When not running the OCWeekly.com and OC Weekly’s social media sites, Taylor “Hellcat” Hamby can be found partying like it’s 1899.
Paul Frank Is Still Orange County’s Friend
“You know what? I’m going to have him wear a spacesuit when he does it,” says cartoonist Paul Frank. The mind most famous for bringing the charismatic Julius the monkey to the world in the mid-1990s is in the middle of a brainstorm. He’s scheming with his intern, Drew Tran, while explaining to a humble scribe from this infernal rag the process that goes into making a ladies handbag.
Orange County’s Tiki Bars of the Past and Present Help You to Forget About Your Boring Life
Standing on what was a quiet orange grove more than half a century ago is a small faux grass hut. A diverse crowd gathers outside: tourists wearing mouse ears, children savoring the sweet tang of a frozen pineapple-flavored treat. Tiki enthusiasts drink in all the details of one of the last remaining sites of the Polynesian cultural phenomenon that popped up in the United States in the 1950s.
Stray Cats Strut Their Stuff For Two Reunion Shows in Costa Mesa
Thursday night the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa was crowded with rockabillies, rockafillys, chilli-billies, psychobillies and whatever other sub-group you can slap that suffix on. Though the Orange County Fair is over, the venue’s amphitheater was filled with folks who lived through the first wave of rockabilly, the second wave of rockabilly, the third wave–what wave are we on now? I’ve lost count.
Baja Bop, a Rockabilly Weekender Cruise, to Set Sail From the Port of Long Beach
Rockabilly fans of the world….do you hear that sound? It’s tequila calling from the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar aboard the Baja Bop musical cruise sailing southbound for Ensenada this October. Titans from the retro roots music genre are going south of the border, down Mexico way, and they’ll be serenading fans aboard the high seas the whole way there.
After Two Decades of Collecting Artifacts from Disneyland, Agent Richard Kraft is Ready to ‘Let It Go’
“This was on the side of the Disneyland Hotel in the 1960s,” explains Mike Van Eaton, owner of the Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks. He gestures to a giant, red neon illuminated letter “D” that stands “12 times the size of God”– to borrow a phrase from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. What was once affixed to the side of the Disneyland Hotel from 1963 to 1999 now sits on the first floor inside of a vacated Sports Authority in a strip mall in the San Fernando Valley.
Atomic Ballroom Kick-Starts the Heart of Dancing in Downtown Fullerton’s Historic Williams Building
The Santa Fe train and bus lines run through the city of Fullerton like a main artery straight to the heart of downtown. Terrestrial travelers flow through the district as though clusters of white blood cells—in and out with each arrival and departure. The pulse of the few blocks that make up the historic downtown is sometimes slow and sedentary, other times wild and raucous. And the building that has served as the right atrium to the heartbeat of downtown since 1927 is the Williams Building.
Five OC Haunts That Kickstarted Steve Martin’s Career
Steve Martin and Disneyland both arrived in Orange County in the same year: 1955. And the transitioning county–then shifting from rural agrarian farm country to the idyllic travel poster for suburban sprawl–has never been the same. As the Orange County grew, so too did the theme park and Martin’s career. The A-list actor, author, comedian, magician, and musician was born a Texan, but Orange County is willing to look past that and claims him an honorary native son.
Heritage Barbecue’s Daniel Castillo has Outlaw Texas Roots with Orange County Heart
In Austin, Texas, there’s one name that sends a giant smoke signal skyward to hungry barbecue fans from around the world, calling, beckoning all night partiers and early-rising professionals in town on business alike: and that name is Franklin. Franklin Barbecue, the small Texas roadhouse shack, is a culinary and cultural phenomena that belies it’s simple exterior.
This Fair County: A Brief Timeline of Orange County’s Farming History
There’s a line in the sands of time by which one can measure Orange County history; on one side is B.D. (Before Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955), and the other, A.D. (After Disney). If you’ll allow the use of a gross generalization, pretty much everything that occured A.D. can be tied back to Mouse Heim in some way.
Legendary Punk Shop Black Hole Records to Move From Downtown Fullerton Location After 27 Years
Fullerton punk rock history has taken back-to-back blows in a mosh pit of bummer news this week. News that the city’s longest-running record store, Black Hole Records, is moving from the brick and mortar shop they’ve called home for the last 27 years hit like a gut punch from a rogue leather jacket-clad elbow.
Burlesque Superstar Dita Von Teese Performs Sold-Out Homecoming Show at the House of Blues Anaheim
Miss Dita Von Teese may not have been the type to be named homecoming queen when she was a student at University High in Irvine in 1990 (she was too busy staying home perfecting her craft and building the empire she now sits proudly on the throne of, after all) but she had a homecoming welcome fit for royalty while headlining the House of Blues in Anaheim on Tuesday.
Dita Von Teese, International Queen of Burlesque, Still Feels Like an Orange County Girl
“Somewhere in the archives,” a satin smooth voice of a woman says on the other end of a San Francisco hotel phone line says, “There’s a picture of a blonde me inside this cage.” She estimates the photo would have been taken in the early 1990s: ‘91, ‘93 maybe.
The Road to Nowhere Begins and Ends in Fullerton
The Road to Nowhere begins at Hunt Park in Fullerton, California. The inaugural foot parade started with a small but mighty, plucky group of 20 or so of Fullerton locals, artists, journalists and even a bonafide ancient parade historian.
The Bookman Move-eth: Beloved Used Bookstore Forced to Move to a New Location
There’s a pivotal scene in the 1947 Frank Capra classic film “It’s A Wonderful Life”, where Jimmy Stewart’s character George Bailey has a moment of clarity–a bitter taste of what life would be like if he had never existed. Bailey’s angel guide, Clarence, sagely remarks, “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives.
What’s Left of Vintage Las Vegas? [Summer Travel 2018]
To live in an extreme environment, you need two things: water and adaptability. Las Vegas has learned how to not only survive, but also thrive in the relative dead center of the Mojave Desert. How do they do it? Water and adaptability. The town got its name from the water and its fame from the extreme adaptation. The name Las Vegas (Spanish for “the meadows”) came in 1829 after natural spring waters in the area led trader Antonio Armijo along the Spanish Trail to Los Angeles.
No Fear of Color: Fashion Designer Trina Turk Continues to Define California Style
The fine Imagineers at our friendly neighborhood Walt Disney Corporation took on a rather arduous task in the 1990s. They had to answer the question: How do you define California style and how do you embody it? The question was asked in 1995 when Michael Eisner and his cronies announced plans for a California-culture and history centric theme park that would be taking over what was then the parking lot of Disneyland.
Eat This Now: Cookies & Dream at Drill’d Ice Cream
There’s the old quip that “sex is like pizza; even when it’s bad it’s still pretty good.” And the same can be said for ice cream. Whether you’re down for a little somethin’ quick and easy at the corner Thrifty’s or down for a three way between you and Ben and Jerry, ice cream is pretty much exciting. Every year or so a new ice cream parlor pops up to pimp out ice cream in novel new ways.

Ladies and germs, may I have your attention please. Join us here at Weekly World Headquarters in welcoming thee Mr. Gregory P. Nagel to the asylum! Mr. Nagel joins the insanity here at OC Weekly as our latest scribe in the gluttonous side of the paper; our Food & Drink section.
Robert Williams Lives the Dream as Big Sandy [OC People 2018]
“I never imagined in a million years where the music would take me to or the places it did,” confides Robert Williams, dressed to the nines in a crisp, black, 1950s suit with a subtly rainbow-flecked vintage shirt he picked up from Elsewhere Vintage in the Orange Circle. His hair is neatly combed and slicked-back, and the sharp lines of his attire and hairdo contrast with his soft face and gentle smile.
The Recently Appointed Queen of Medieval Times in Buena Park Is Met With Cheers and Jeers
“Are you ready to be a queen?” Queen Isabella asks the young girl standing in front of her as a mid-size crowd of tourists gathers in the main hall of a replica castle on Beach Boulevard on a recent Monday night. “It’s quite exciting,” she assures the child.
Designer Betsey Johnson Shares Her Guide to Living and Loving with Style
When it comes to matters of happiness, career and style, Betsey Johnson’s advice on all three are essentially the same: “decide it, then do it.” The iconic fashion designer knows there’s a time and place to be superfluous (which is to say, often) but when it comes to success in all aspects of life, she is straight to the point. “Courage,” says the 75-year-old goddess of bold, eccentric and unapologetically pink ladies fashion, is the key to style. “Just decide to go do it one day.
Revisiting the Legacy of Sam’s Seafood, Seal Beach’s Original Polynesian Palace
The buildings that have stood at what’s now 16278 Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach or Surfside (call it what you want, just don’t DARE call it Huntington Beach around a local) have weathered their fair share of storms over the years. They’ve endured the tradewinds of new development, a flaming inferno and even Hurricane Hamby after I’ve had one mai tai too many.
For the Birds: Orange County Was Once the Ostrich Capital of the Nation
There’s something about central Orange County that attracts people to enter into bizarre enterprises involving animals and tourists. Yes, Walt Disney and his mouse are the most exemplary example, but the city has had a storied history filled with folks capitalizing on animalistic entertainment long before Disneyland took over. (In Anaheim, the Mouse owns you!) Among the bird-brained business ventures was the county’s ostrich-farm boom of the 1880s and 1890s, which started in Anaheim.
Historic Japanese Site in Huntington Beach Is in Danger of Being Torn Down for a Self-Storage Facility
There are currently five branches of Public Storage’s self-storage facilities in Huntington Beach, with talks of adding a sixth. Coincidentally, there are just five buildings that remain from the earliest days of the Japanese settlement in Orange County during the infancy of the 20th century in what is now Huntington Beach. On the corner of present-day Warner Avenue and Nichols Lane stands 5 acres of land haphazardly hidden behind tarps and wire fences.
A Tale of Two Fountains: Old Towne Orange's Historic Fountain Is a New Deal Relic
The small, circular island at the center of the iconic traffic circle at the heart of Old Towne Orange is one of the town's most prominent celebrities (step aside, Amber Lynn). The Plaza or the Circle—the proper name is subject to a haughty, persistent debate—has been featured in shows such as Parks and Recreation and California's Gold with Huell Howser.

Orange County Women's March 2018 @ Downtown Santa Ana
The Orange County Women's March took place in Downtown Santa Ana on January 20 on the one year anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration and the inaugural Women's March which mobilized pro-equality and human rights advocates around the globe.
