AmaBhungane can reveal that former National Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane is a family friend of the Mkhize sisters, whose non-profit company was paid R1-million by VBS Mutual Bank.

Dondo Mogajane denies receiving a bribe from VBS chairperson Tshifhiwa Matodzi. Matodzi alleges the former Treasury director-generalgave the nod for a R1 million payment into a bank account belonging to the Baphilile Foundation. Mogajane, however, has not responded to allegations of an informal meeting at which a 'bribe' was agreed. In August 2017, VBS Mutual Bank was dealt a blow that would, a few months down the line, prove to be fatal.
