Introduction Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of death and neurodevelopmental impairment in children (1). Brain damage after a perinatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insult is a dynamic process that evolves over time (2). During the primary HI insult, an impaired delivery of oxygen and energy substrates to maintain normal cell metabolism will result in an anaerobe metabolism and lactate production (3).
