From the corral: Preventing cattle back-ups

Recently I had the opportunity to visit several new beef plants. Many of them have my layout designs, which really pleased me. There is one feature that needs to be improved. It is the design of one-way backstop gates that prevent cattle from backing up in the single file chute. A common mistake is installing too many backstop gates. This is likely to cause increased balking and refusal to move forward. In most facilities, only two backstop gates are usually needed.
