Review of Terahertz Tomography Techniques

Review of Terahertz Tomography Techniques

Springer — Terahertz and millimeter waves penetrate various dielectric materials, including plastics, ceramics, crystals, and concrete, allowing terahertz transmission and reflection images to be considered as a new imaging tool complementary to X-Ray or Infrared. Terahertz imaging is a well-established technique in various laboratory and industrial applications. However, these images are often two-dimensional.

Ultra-flexible multiband terahertz metamaterial absorber for conformal geometry applications

Ultra-flexible multiband terahertz metamaterial absorber for conformal geometry applications

osapublishing.org — Standard optical lithography relying on clean room and microelectronic facilities is used to fabricate a thin-flexible metamaterial absorber, designed to operate at submillimeter wavelengths over the 0.1–1 THz frequency band. Large terahertz absorption has been demonstrated numerically and through experimental measurements with a maximum level of about 80%.

sciencedirect.com — In this review, we describe dielectric properties of biological tissues and liquids in the context of terahertz (THz) biophotonics. We discuss a model of the THz dielectric permittivity of water and water-containing media, which yields analysis of the relaxation and damped resonant molecules modes.

Propagation beam consideration for 3D THz computed tomography

Propagation beam consideration for 3D THz computed tomography

osapublishing.org — In this paper, a model of the beam propagation is developed according to the physical properties of THz waves used in THz computed tomography (CT) scan imaging. This model is first included in an acquisition simulator to observe and estimate the impact of the Gaussian beam intensity profile on the projection sets.

Linear to radial polarization conversion in the THz domain using a passive system

Linear to radial polarization conversion in the THz domain using a passive system

osapublishing.org — This paper addresses a passive system capable of converting a linearly polarized THz beam into a radially polarized one. This is obtained by extending to THz frequencies and waveguides an already proven concept based on mode selection in optical fibers.

osapublishing.org — Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is not only used to make 3D objects but also for rapid prototyping. In industry and laboratories, quality controls for these objects are necessary though difficult to implement compared to classical methods of fabrication because the layer-by-layer printing allows for very complex object manufacturing that is unachievable with standard tools.

Ordered subsets convex algorithm for 3D terahertz transmission tomography

osapublishing.org — We investigate in this paper a new reconstruction method in order to perform 3D Terahertz (THz) tomography using a continuous wave acquisition setup in transmission mode. This method is based on the Maximum Likelihood for TRansmission tomography (ML-TR) first developed for X-ray imaging.

Pilot study of freshly excised breast tissue response in the 300 - 600 GHz range

Pilot study of freshly excised breast tissue response in the 300 - 600 GHz range

osapublishing.org — The failure to accurately define tumor margins during breast conserving surgery (BCS) results in a 20% re-excision rate. The present paper reports the investigation to evaluate the potential of terahertz imaging for breast tissue recognition within the under-explored 300 - 600 GHz range.

Terahertz radiation for tomographic inspection

Terahertz radiation for tomographic inspection

spiedigitallibrary.org — 15 May 2012 Terahertz radiation for tomographic inspection Three-dimensional (3-D) terahertz computed tomography has already been performed with three different reconstruction methods (standard back-projection algorithm and two iterative analyses) to reconstruct 3-D objects. A Gaussian beam model is developed according to the physical properties of terahertz waves such as the energy distribution within the propagation path.

Art Painting Diagnostic Before Restoration with Terahertz and Millimeter Waves

Art Painting Diagnostic Before Restoration with Terahertz and Millimeter Waves

Springer — Art painting diagnostic is commonly performed using electromagnetic waves at wavelengths from terahertz to X-ray. These former techniques are essential in conservation and art history research, but they could be also very useful for restoring artwork.

Low-frequency noise effect on terahertz tomography using thermal detectors

Low-frequency noise effect on terahertz tomography using thermal detectors

osapublishing.org — In this paper, the impact of low-frequency noise on terahertz-computed tomography (THz-CT) is analyzed for several measurement configurations and pyroelectric detectors. We acquire real noise data from a continuous millimeter-wave tomographic scanner in order to figure out its impact on reconstructed images.

Coupling and Propagation of Sommerfeld Waves at 100 and 300 GHz

Coupling and Propagation of Sommerfeld Waves at 100 and 300 GHz

Springer — The coupling between a linearly-polarized gaussian beam and a Sommerfeld wave propagating on a circular metallic wire is obtained owing to a differential phase element inserted in front of the metal wire. At millimeter-wavelengths we calculate a theoretical maximum coupling efficiency of 32% for this system in spite of the metal nature and radius in the range of a few hundreds of microns.

Shape-from-focus for real-time terahertz 3D imaging

osapublishing.org — Thanks to significant advances in real-time terahertz imaging in terms of resolution and image quality, adapting and extending optical methods for 3D imaging at the millimeter scale is now promising. The shape-from-focus algorithm is a post-processing tool used in optical microscopy to reconstruct the external shape surface of a convex surface object.

pubs.acs.org — Terahertz spectroscopy, a noninvasive and nondestructive analytical technique used in art conservation and restoration, can provide compelling data concerning the composition and condition of culturally valuable and historical objects. Terahertz spectral databases of modern and ancient artists' pigments exist but lack explanations for the origins of the unique spectral features.

Liquid index matching for 2D and 3D terahertz imaging

Liquid index matching for 2D and 3D terahertz imaging

osapublishing.org — Two-dimensional (2D) terahertz imaging and 3D visualization suffer from severe artifacts since an important part of the terahertz beam is reflected, diffracted, and refracted at each interface. These phenomena are due to refractive index mismatch and reflection in the case of non-orthogonal incidence.
