Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first OFFICIAL job as a journalist was interviewing Leland Melvin, NASA astronaut and associate administrator of education, for USA Today.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, and that's how I honed the ability to make sure that my first draft was perfect. Liquid paper was awful.

How is social media changing news?

Good: It helps reach more readers. Bad: Fake news, and everyone considers themselves reporters.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

The job of a journalist is to follow the story wherever it leads. impartially and objectively. Our job is to tell the story, not shape it.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter is my playground.

Who do you wish followed you?

The usual suspects: Pres Obama, Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Zuckerberg - and also Jerry Jones, Derek Jeter, and Rachel Maddow.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love hearing and sharing stories that enlighten and inform.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Can't choose one: I'm proud that my body of work helps readers make more informed decisions regarding money, college, leadership, and ethics.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Can't choose just one: the worst pitches are shameless plugs from PR reps who read a query and reply with completely irrelevant sources.
