Property taxes: Confusing, chaotic and outdated approaches need fundamental reform | Terry Johnson
There has been considerable discussion during the 68th and 69th legislatures about property taxes in Montana. The finger pointing varies from too much spending, primarily by local governments, to lack of action by the governor and the 68th Legislature to reduce the current residential taxable value tax rate from 1.35% to 0.94% to solve the problem. Regardless of which side you agree with, both arguments miss the point of the underlying issue.
Family Worship: A Sermon by J. H. Merle d'Aubigné
Date February 3, 2025 As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. — Joshua 24:15 ‘LET me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!’ (Num. 23:10). We have said, my brethren, on a former occasion, that if we would die his death, we must live his life.
Texts That Transform: Marriage and Family
Book Description Those who are inclined to view Christian salvation as ‘fire insurance,’ vital in eternity but irrelevant in this world, fail to understand the pervasiveness of Christian thought. Does ‘the mind of Christ’ extend beyond religion to what one may think of as non-religious realms? Does taking ‘every thought captive’ include our thoughts about gender, sexual relations, marriage, family, children, and child-rearing? Indeed it does. Scripture addresses all these issues.

Ecclesiastical Suicide
It appears that there no longer remains any behaviour which mainline Protestants are willing to call sexually perverse. It seems that the category of sin in sexual relations has disappeared altogether. The great old American Protestant establishment, the once wise mother church of most American Protestants, is pursuing a course of self-destruction.

Canada’s High Frequency Rail project needs more transparency
by Terry Johnson and Peter Miasek “High Frequency Rail gathering steam,” bureaucrats said at the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships at the November 2022 conference. It followed an article in the Toronto Star, a day earlier, reporting that the cost of the 15-kilometre Ontario Line subway in Toronto has ballooned from $10.9 to $19 billion and may yet go higher.
NHARPC REPORT: The Challenges to Community Transportation in New Hampshire
In our car-dependent culture, many of us don’t often think about what happens if we lose our ability to drive, even if it’s just temporary. Still, if you needed to get to the doctor, grocery store, pharmacy, or anywhere else, how would you, if you couldn’t drive? New Hampshire’s most vulnerable populations face this dilemma every day.
Ask ACE: What would the consulting life be like?
By Terry Johnson of Practical Decisions The Association for Consulting Expertise (ACE) is a nonprofit association of independent consultants who value “success through collaboration.” More Information Q: Between the Gig Economy and the Great Resignation many of my colleagues have started consulting practices. I’m seriously considering consulting myself. What would life be like? ACE Advises: As ACE’s president this is a subject near and dear to my heart.
Proud to serve community and work together all these years
MAYOR OF TOLAR It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Tolar over the last 20-plus years as mayor. The road to this title started many years ago as a young mischievous boy running up and down Squaw Creek with BB gun in hand hunting for frogs and snakes. I also enjoyed as a young boy riding my bike around town looking for soda pop bottles to redeem and buy candy and soda pop.

By Terry Johnson, independent consultant and ACE president Q: Are there any grants available in Maine specifically geared toward funding technical assistance? ACE Advises: Technical assistance and consulting are allowable expenses in many grants for businesses, including most of the current American Rescue Plan Act-funded project grants. There is also a recently launched technical assistance grant available through the Maine Technology Institute.
The Lord has Given You the. . .
Do you find yourself constantly surprised by the things that God says are important as you read through Scripture? I found this, yet again, just a couple of weeks ago when I came to preach on Exodus 16 and was confronted by a whole chapter about manna. More space is given to it in Exodus than the Passover or the crossing of the Red Sea! Its importance is highlighted in Exodus 16:32 where God commands that a portion of it is to be kept in a jar as a memorial for future generations.
Please get vaccinated
To the editor, COVID is not over. It appears many people are acting as if the pandemic is over. When I go into stores, many folks inside ignore the sign that says masks are required for those not vaccinated. Currently in Minnesota 68% are vaccinated (less than 50% in Kanabec County), and I typically see less than 10% of the customers in masks. Minnesota is hurting right now from all the patients with COVID. Lately we have had difficulty getting people transferred to hospitals in the metro.
Vaccine is safe-please get one
To the editor, Seventy-six. That’s the number of children who have died from COVID last month in the U.S. In the last year 408 children have died from COVID in the U.S. If there was some scourge that was causing this kind of fatality rate in children, we would stop everything to try to find out what was causing it. We know what’s causing this. We even have ways to keep children from getting infected in the first place.
Guest columnist Terry S. Johnson: Vote ‘No’ — start over smart for Jones Library
By Terry S. Johnson Amherst voters will shortly decide a referendum question whether or not to borrow $35.3 million for a Jones demolition/expansion proposal or to “start over smart” by planning a more modest, less destructive and less expensive project which will meet the needs of the library and not jeopardize other capital and operating budgets.
We want someone to be there when we get sick
To the editor, Somebody has to be here. COVID is raging again. Staffing in hospitals nation-wide has become a serious threat to our ability to care for sick patients. Believe what you must about the coronavirus vaccines, but the only way we can diminish our current staffing issues is if COVID backs off. Congestive heart failure and kidney stones don’t take a pause because we are in a pandemic.
Please get vaccinated
To the editor, If you haven’t completed COVID vaccination and you are an adult, then the current COVID surge is your fault. Go ahead with your excuses and believe all the conspiracy theories you want, but that statement above is true. Unless you have a legitimate medical reason not to be vaccinated, you should get the vaccine. Because our country has the financial means to do it, we have the capability of protecting most Americans.

Comcast brings Lift Zones to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland Metro
When I was a kid, growing up in Texas, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Permian Basin provided a safe environment for me to play and hang out with friends. Little did I know I was also establishing relationships with positive mentors and building essential life skills. Now, as the CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland Metro, I know many of the essential life skills our Boys and Girls Club kids need are digital.
Please get vaccinated
To the editor, I have news for you, COVID is not over. Thankfully, it is much better than it was, but it is still here and will be for a while. We are still seeing cases at the hospital albeit at a significantly diminished rate. Since our county has one of the lowest rates of vaccination in the state, we will see infection regularly for some time. I want things to get back to normal. I want life to be as open and free as it was in 2019.

Johnson: Too many questions remain about Jones Library project
By Terry S. Johnson Is the upcoming Jones Library vote really the moment that we in Amherst have been waiting for? Or is it the one that threatens to saddle average homeowners with onerous debt and jeopardize reducing the town’s carbon footprint down the road? This Monday, April 5, the Amherst Town Council is expected to vote on the Jones Library demolition/expansion proposal. Why now?
Guest columnist Terry S. Johnson: Can Amherst afford the Jones project? Let’s look at the numbers
Published: 12/7/2020 3:53:34 PM For the 40 years I’ve lived in Amherst, the Jones Library’s three-branch system has served as a community hub with an excellent staff who steadfastly provide books, electronic materials and diverse programs, as well as computers and hotspot availability for patrons of all ages, backgrounds and cultures. It’s already successfully providing 21st century library services.
Wearing a mask is crucial
To the editor, Let’s say you needed surgery, and when the surgeon came in your pre-op room she was sneezing into a tissue. Then when you go into the operating room just before you go under, you see the surgeon come in not wearing a mask. If you end up developing a wound infection from the surgery, you might suspect that this variation from normal was malpractice. My point is doctors wear masks during surgery to prevent the patient from getting ill from them.

Paid letter: President cares about himself not America
To the editor, Driving home recently from northern Minnesota, I was not surprised to see a lot of Trump/Pence signs. I know rural areas are the president’s strongholds. It has always seemed odd to me that he does well in these localities. He is a racist, misogynistic, compulsive liar who has used his office to make money for himself, his family and friends.
Ask ACE: But what is the gig economy?
Q: I’m a skilled professional about to become a member of the gig economy. But what is it? ACE advises: The gig economy is the sum of independent service contractors, the work they perform and the businesses that pay them. Gig workers are entrepreneurs and essential contributors to the entrepreneur community. It is estimated that by 2027 more than half of U.S. workers will be self-employed.
Paid Letter: Trump has got to go
To the editor, I remember being shorter than most of the kids at Leach School back in Cloquet over 50 years ago. I also had a round head and big ears. I remember one of my uncles teasing me once, telling me I looked like a Volkswagen with the doors open. For whatever reason I seemed to be a constant object of torment by all the bullies.
Huey Newton: Armed and Intellectually Dangerous
Huey Newton, 1942-1989: Armed and Intellectually Dangerous September 5, 1989 One night in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a group of white boys drove alongside my drop-top 1963 Chevy Impala, called me a nigger, and threw empty beer cans at my ride. I chased them down a darkened street. They stopped and got out the car, smiling like they was going to kick some black ass. I got out, went to the truck, and pulled out my 300 Savage semiautomatic rifle.
Family Worship 101
“Why did you steal my gods?” With these words, Laban ended a passionate speech against his son-in-law Jacob (Gen. 31:30). In fact, Laban’s daughter Rachel had stolen his idols, doubtless to keep alive the memory of her family after moving away with her husband, Jacob. Rachel literally took her family religion with her. Every family has a god. Every day, young adults leave home with the gods of self-fulfillment, money, leisure, work, or even ministry.
