On May 14, 2026, Afghanistan's Taliban government abolished the country's minimum marriage age for girls, declaring that marriage eligibility would now be determined by puberty rather than age. The decree reversed the previous legal minimum age of 16. Further, it weakened the rights of Afghan girls, who had already been banned from secondary schools and universities since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

As Osun State prepares for its off-cycle governorship election on August 15, 2026, attention is turning not only to who will win but also to how many registered voters will actually cast their ballots. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 2.3 million voters are registered for the election after concluding the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
