Is the dress green or red? Planet-friendly couture won't be for everyone but it can lead the way
Hollywood legend Jane Fonda hit the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony stage this week in a beaded red dress by Elie Saab – a gown she had previously worn at Cannes in 2014. Rising star Kaitlyn Dever walked the Oscars red carpet in a deep scarlet Louis Vuitton dress she told reporters was “completely sustainable” thanks to fibre technology. Two very different fashion approaches towards saving the planet – but how effective are they at mitigating the environmental impact of fashion?
The robot wears Prada: what happens when AI starts giving out fashion tips?
The tech giants Amazon, Google and Facebook have all begun to use machine learning to give you tips on what to wear. Is fashion styling the next field to be disrupted by artificial intelligence (AI), or will the human eye remain supreme? It’s too soon to know for sure, but understanding what machine learning is good at and how that overlaps with what fashion is all about can help us make some educated guesses.
Time to make fast fashion a problem for its makers, not charities
Returning our old clothes to big fashion chains - rather than taking them to charity stores - could make fast fashion companies pay for their waste and fuel vital recycling research. Even better if we all do it at once. Public protests, such as Extinction Rebellion’s colourful catwalk that blocked roads in central London in April, have raised awareness yet done little to motivate governments to address the environmental impact of the fast fashion industry.
For a true war on waste, the fashion industry must spend more on research
The rise of fast fashion in Australia means 6000 kg of clothing is dumped in landfill every 10 minutes. The ABC’s War On Waste visualised this statistic by piling a giant mound of clothing waste in the middle of the city. So what to do about it? Sustainable fashion experts advocate abstaining from buying fast fashion, promoting clothing swaps and repairing old clothing. Others suggest buying organic and ethically-sourced clothes or designing clothing using zero waste techniques.
