WINDSOR — An hourslong takeover by inmates at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail ended after officers with the State Bureau of Investigation entered the facility and secured the scene. According to a news release Monday afternoon, SBI officers entered the regional jail and cleared the facility. All staff and inmates had been accounted for, the SBI said in the release, which was released jointly by Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin and Martin County Sheriff Drew Robinson.

Bertie-Martin Jail hostages released, situation ongoing

Hostages have been released from the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail, according to local and state officials. A press release from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin and Martin County Sheriff Drew Robinson said the situation is still ongoing and the public should avoid County Farm Rd. in Windsor. The SBI has entered Bertie-Martin Regional and is in the process of securing the last inmates remaining in the facility.
