1 Introduction 1,3,5-Triazine, also known as s-triazine (s = symmetrical), is an aromatic heterocycle consisting of three alternating carbon and nitrogen atoms. Its derivatives are being investigated for a broad array of applications such as pharmaceuticals [1, 3], herbicides [4, 5], or flame retardants [6, 7]. A readily available and commonly employed starting material for s-triazine syntheses is melamine (i.e., 2,4,6-triamino-s-triazine).

1 Introduction In 1834, the famous chemist Justus von Liebig described a series of nitrogen-rich heterocyclic compounds [1]. Among these is melamine (2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine), which finds nowadays industrial use in combination with formaldehyde as a resin material used for the preparation of thermosetting plastics [2, 3]. In addition, Liebig investigated several pyrolysis and hydrolysis products of melamine (Scheme 1).
