Before I started locuming... I worked at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, where I had completed my pre-reg, for three months. I was in that transition period from being newly qualified, and was gaining more confidence. It was great to have very knowledgeable colleagues around to ask any questions while I was starting to become more independent.

Have you had a particularly inspiring or standout moment during your pre-reg? Caroline Mansfield (CM): Because of where I work, I have been fortunate to see quite complex cases. My optometrist colleagues often bring me in the room when they see something worthwhile. The exhilaration that came with passing my Stage 1 was probably my favourite moment so far. Work paying off is always what keeps me going. It also coincided with the week before my wedding, so that was a great week for me.

I’m more than halfway through my pre-registration now – time is really flying by. I have completed Stage 1, and I have my Stage 2 assessments fast approaching. Biggest learnings I’ve learnt that your pre-registration experience often depends on the initiative you take with your learning, so take every opportunity to learn. Ask questions, no matter how big or small. At the end of the day, you are a trainee and you are expected to have questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
