1 Introduction Soil degradation is a major constraint to the sustainability of agricultural production, particularly in tropical regions where high weathering, erosion and intensive land use accelerate the loss of fertility (Lal 2009). Degraded soils are characterised by reduced nutrient availability, poor structure and low biological activity, which limit their capacity to sustain crops and provide ecosystem services.
