Reflecting on the 22 Years Since the World Said No to War
What do we have to show for more than 20 years of war and trillions of dollars spent, since that prophetic day, February 15, 2003, when the world said no to the impending war on Iraq? It may be useful to reflect on the past decades of never-ending wars and peer at the near future to assess where we might be headed. The fact that there has been no accountability for US war crimes now holds crucial consequences for our society, as we are faced with renegade rule in all branches of government.
Reflecting on the 22 Years Since the World Said No to War | Common Dreams
Dedication: to the Declaration of Independence; it is worth re-reading. What do we have to show for more than 20 years of war and trillions of dollars spent, since that prophetic day, February 15, 2003, when the world said no to the impending war on Iraq? It may be useful to reflect on the past decades of never-ending wars and peer at the near future to assess where we might be headed.
A MAD For Our Times
We who call Planet Earth home face unparalleled catastrophe because we live in ways that do great harm to the natural world, of which we are only a part. Knowledge that the planet could be destroyed by nuclear bombs in one hour has contributed to a nihilistic, exploitative, deeply held approach to daily life that avoids accountability for militarism, racism and materialism. The exploitative approach to life has wrought a climate crisis.

20 Years of Wars and 20 Years Standing for Peace
From the passage of the AUMF to providing Ukraine with tanks, more than two decades of wars have hurtled by since the freezing cold morning when we got up, dressed in our warmest layers and braved the cold to board the bus at Town Hall and travel to New York City joining the millions on the day the world said no to war. Rallies were held around the world on February 15, 2003 to protest the coming war on Iraq. Eleven million people turned out.

Cape Cod Bay in the Crosshairs - Holtec’s Reactor Waste Water Threat
Still dreaming of a nuclear reactor that is clean, safe and cheap? Holtec Decommissioning International Corp. is trying to turn that dream to a nightmare. The newly minted subsidiary intends to dump roughly one million gallons radioactively contaminated nuclear reactor waste water into Cape Cod Bay, which happens to be a part of the protected Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
Imperial Nostalgia and Its Perils
Although great empires rank among the most powerful engines of world history, they are also among the most dangerous, especially as they brood over their decline. The Russian empire provides a striking illustration of this phenomenon. Traditionally referred to as the “prison of nations,” Russia, in its Czarist and Soviet phases, controlled a vast Eurasian land mass of subject peoples.
Will Those Who Love and Respect Women Rise Up?
The impending doom of overturning Roe v Wade has sent shock waves through our society. For those of us old enough to remember when abortion was illegal (I am barely in that age group) a heavy sense of dread immediately settled across our backs. All week I've been thinking about a moment from my past. In June of 1986, I went to New York to see my mother who was not well. One of the days I was there, I went down to Greenwich Village, my old stomping grounds.

Reflection on the 75th Anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
My mother was a nuclear victim, indirectly, caught by prevailing nuclear madness, characterized by the institutional, pervasive lies about the dangers of everything nuclear, including x-rays. Radiation was administered instead of a readily available antibiotic. Doctors gave her cancer and cancer killed her. She was sixty years old. I dedicate these words to her memory.
Reflection on the Upcoming 75th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
It is one hundred seconds to midnight by the Doomsday Clock. For seventy-five years the world has lived on the edge of nuclear terror, the horrific knowledge that in a time frame as short as one hour, life as we know it on Planet Earth could be obliterated if nuclear weapons are used. My mother was a nuclear victim, indirectly, caught by prevailing nuclear madness, characterized by the institutional, pervasive lies about the dangers of everything nuclear, including x-rays.
"We Must Learn to Live Together as Brothers or Perish as Fools"
We are living in a profoundly dangerous moment. We write as members of the coordinating committee of United for Peace and Justice, a national network of peace groups. We are long time activists and mothers of grown children. We worry that violence in America is spinning out of control. There are a multitude of alarming crises facing our country and the world which can overwhelm and paralyze us, preventing us from taking action. But there are things we can do.
