We are honored to follow our colleague, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, John Fraser, in leading Curator: The Museum Journal. Our field owes him a debt, as does Wiley Publishing, for nine years of service. We are grateful for his sage guidance as we enter this work; we could not do so without him. We do not undertake the Editors-in-Chief position lightly, and we know we have big shoes to fill as we move into this role.

BACKGROUND Images included in museum academic literature or museum websites are part of the essential attributes of objects, providing evidence and illustrations explanations of processes (Cecilia et al., 2023a). They are used as key data, crucial to communicate information, and an integral part of the scholarly discussion and the museological practice (ibid). Vision impaired, as well as sighted researchers often use assistive technology to access papers.

BENEFITS OF AltText When discussing web accessibility, the consensus is that changing, adapting, or retrofitting a website to respond to accessibility requirements once it has launched is far harder than coding and integrating features from the beginning of the development. The creative development of AltText for images follows a similar pattern.
