What was your first job as a journalist?

First job as an amateur journalist: The Chronicle, student newspaper at Mason High School.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Will McAvoy from The Newsroom.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A truth-seeking storyteller.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My favorites: my iPhone, editing programs on my Mac and Datawrapper for data viz.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes -- I was a writer, then associate editor for The Chronicle at Mason High School in Ohio.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be true to yourself. Be confident. And be curious.

When's the best time to pitch you?

After deadline (5 p.m.).

What's your favorite drink?

Big fan of La Croix sparkling water, at the moment.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

My big passion is theater. I try to go see musicals or plays or audition for local community theaters when I can.
