She’s got no idea. She can huff and puff into her hot chocolate all she likes, but it’s not going to fix anything. It’s not going to fix me. I crack my elbows onto the table, cradling my head in my hands and peek at the clock just behind her on the wall. Five more minutes and that’s it. I’m out of here. I don’t know how she can bear it.

She flings her arms around my neck and squeezes me like she’s never going to let me go. My head spins as her lips brush against my cheek. She must be able to feel my heart thumping in my chest. I shuffle backwards and ram my hands into my coat pockets, watching her reach down and heave the rucksack across her shoulders. “It was so good to see you again,” she says, jiggling the pack from side to side and tugging on the straps.
