One of the signs of the impending New Year in my late Soviet childhood was the appearance in stores of outlandish green fruits with the dreamy name of Feijoa. The delicious and fragrant feijoa fruits usually appeared in stores in early December, brought in mainly from the Transcaucasus, but they are also grown in other warm regions: in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Black Sea region.
