Can’t wait for the next big idea from NYC Sanitation Department (letter to the editor)
Thursday is the day the DOS picks up my garbage, composting and recyclables. So, they’re taking the garbage and composting and putting it in the same truck. So why am I doing the composting? I’m done dragging out all these pails for no reason. Plus, the 13-gallon composting bin is not big enough for all of my composting. One free bin does not do the job. What great idea is next? Lanternflies be gone . . . please (letter to the editor)
On Arthur Kill Road ,just past Carlyle Green (in Village Greens), there is a tree loaded with lanternflies. It looks like the tree is dying, like the one I had outside of my house (in Chestnut Circle) that died. How do we get rid of them? Besides killing them? They are all over the area. Any help from the city would be greatly appreciated. In addition, make sure your dog does not eat them. There are conflicting reports. One says they are harmless to pets and another says they get sick. So beware.

NYC garbage bin costs will never stop (letter to the editor)
Now NYC is forcing us to purchase composting and garbage bins (pails) for homes 1 - 9 units. Why not every building? The composting bins will start to smell and during the winter it would be hard the clean them so we can purchase liners (another cost factor) to use all year long. Nobody wants to smell rotting food in the house or garage. So, the bin will be put in the yard. What happens when the bin is stolen? Another purchase must be made. Some will be stolen. Does it ever stop? No. Never.
Harris’ contributions as V.P. weren’t much to speak of (letter to the editor)
Vice President Kamala Harris hasn’t been visible much in the last 3-1/2 years. Her contributions to assist President Biden have not been much to talk about. Now she is telling us she can fix what is wrong. Did Biden not trust her ideas or was she just being ignored? Should she win in November, will she follow what Biden did? I’m sure she will tell us what we want to hear (like most politicians). Can she really fix the problems we have? (Thomas Bell is an Arden Heights resident.)
Candidates should think hard on VP choices (letter to the editor)
With two older men running for the presidency, the V.P. is important to me. No matter who wins in November, we will have to endure four more years unless one of them steps down, gets impeached or passes away. Biden is sticking with V.P. Kamala Harris (laughing all the way) and Trump has not mentioned who will be his running mate. This is something of the utmost importance and they should think about who could be the next president. Prison plan will waste taxpayer money (letter to the editor)
Our city is planning on spending $6.8 billion on two new prisons. How about building a hospital for the mentally ill people that need help? Stop blaming the pandemic for their problems and do something to help them. Worse yet, the city intends to issue Design Build contracts. This will cause the contracts to exceed the projected $6.8 billion and the project will not be completed by 2027, which is the date to close the prison on Rikers Island. Taxpayers’ money will be wasted again.
How long before our electric grid fails from increased use? (letter to the editor)
We’re being pushed to purchase electric cars and now the government is looking into electric stoves instead of a gas stove. How long will it be before our electric grid won’t be able to handle the power needed? By the way, what is more expensive to use: Con Edison Electric or National Grid gas? Either way, with the increase of use our cost will go up. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
Maybe the bleeding hearts should each take in a migrant (letter to the editor)
We are spending over a billion dollars on the migrants (border crossers) and our politicians don’t see that as a problem. How about our own citizens that are having a hard time? They said our economy is doing better, but I still see everything is priced higher than it was. What about the seniors and the veterans that need help? Maybe if all the bleeding hearts would take in a MIGRANT to help instead of leaving it up to the taxpayers to carry the burden . . . Something has to be done.
Where have my Christmas cards gone? (letter to the editor)
I am still waiting for three Christmas cards (with gift certificates/ cards) to be delivered. One to upstate New York, one to Pennsylvania and the other one to Massachusetts. All my other cards were delivered. Is there a thief in the Staten Island Post Office? Of course, regular mail cannot be traced, so I am at a loss and nothing can be done about it. I tried to go online and make a complaint, but there are no forms. This is our post office looking fot an increase.
We don’t need more housing. We need a city hospital and parking spaces (letter to the editor)
A proposal to create 2,400 new housing units, stores and a 600-seat school would create 7,500 jobs. Nothing was said about what parking will be made available. This sounds nice, but what is needed is another hospital, as there are only two on the entire Island and they are overcrowded. The Island is the only borough that does not have a city hospital. Once again, the forgotten borough is being forgotten. (Thomas Bell is an Arden Heights resident.)
Please, no President Kamala Harris (letter to the editor)
Subscribers can gift articles to anyone Not that I am thrilled with President Biden, but I would rather have Present Biden than have V.P. Kamala Harris become President. What has she done, except give a laugh after she answers a question? We will service another year of Biden before we get someone better to vote into office, hopefully. Rethinking our choice for mayor of NYC (letter to the editor)
Subscribers can gift articles to anyone Once again, we may have voted for the wrong person for mayor. So far, Mayor Adams has not impressed me and I think many other voters. Life in my beloved city is not what it once was. Just thinking (about) what we may have had with Curtis Sliwa as mayor. Hey, it may not be any worse. (Thomas Bell is an Arden Heights resident.) War is about hatred of Jews (letter to the editor)
Hamas against Israel? Or is it Hamas against Jews? The war has nothing to do with the State of Israel — it’s about hatred of Jews. This hatred has been going on for centuries and may never stop. Every time it looks like it’s settled, it flares up again. Like many other war, it’s all about religion. Meanwhile, the Hamas leader is in Qatar celebrating dead Jews, not territory won. By the way, I am not of the Jewish faith.
New York’s pricey baseball players getting us nowhere (letter to the editor)
Both New York ball clubs spent hundreds of millions of dollars on players. I thought this year we would see the Mets and Yankees in the World Series. We had the players. Man, was I wrong. All we got was two expensive teams going nowhere. What did those Brooklyn Bums say, “wait til next year?” Well, we are in the same boat now. See you next year guys. I’m done. When does the hockey season start? Not soon enough. (Thomas Bell is an Arden Heights resident.)
So glad Barkley signed to play (letter to the editor)
So glad that Saquon Barkley signed to play, rather sit out for a year, which might diminish his skills, like some before him. He, like Aaron Judge, is betting on himself to have a great year and sign for mega bucks next year, whether it will be with the Giants or another NFL team. (Thomas Bell is an Arden Heights resident.) History isn’t ours to erase (letter to the editor)
Our history is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for us to not forget and for us to learn from it. If it offends you, even better, then you are less likely to repeat it. It’s not for you to erase. It belongs to every one of us. (Thomas Bell is an Arden Heights resident.)
George Santos should resign. What are they thinking? (letter to the editor)
How is it that the Republican Party did not know of the lies of George Santos? Did they just pull his name out of a hat to run against the Democrats? Maybe they knew he has the gift of gab and will win over the voters. As for Speaker Kevin McCarthy, what is he thinking about by not asking the liar Santos to resign? Perhaps he is more worried about losing the seat in the house to a Democrat in an election.
George Santos should resign or be removed (letter to the editor)
While reading about all the lies George Santos has said it makes me wonder: Is this the best the Republican party has to offer? Evidently nobody checked Santos’s background. Or do they think the public is that stupid? Shame on that party. That is why they cannot and will not win in the future. It’s time for Santos to resign, or the government step up and have him removed. (Thomas M.
How many illegals went to Delaware?(letter to the editor)
What is our government doing to our country and city? President Biden is allowing tens of thousands asylum seekers to enter our country and sending thousands to New York City for us to take care of. Our mayor says that we will have to cut services in order to help these illegal immigrants. We don’t have enough housing, jobs or money to do what President Biden expects of us. What services do we cut to provide for these people?
