EEG functional connectivity as a prognostic biomarker of adaptive function in autistic people
Abstract Many autistic people have challenges with adaptive function, impacting education, employment and independent-living goals. Adaptive function outcomes of autistic people vary considerably, which makes planning for future needs challenging. Here, using a developmentally sensitive approach, we investigated if cortico-cortical functional connectivity – a core neurobiological feature that differs in autism – could predict longitudinal changes in adaptive function in autistic people.
Estimating differing causal roles of glutamate and GABA genes on brain and behavior in autism

Abstract The excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) imbalance theory suggests that excitatory and inhibitory alterations underlies autism characteristics. However, genetic underpinnings of this imbalance and its impact on brain function and behavior remains unclear.

Polygenic and developmental profiles of autism differ by age at diagnosis - Nature Original
Abstract Although autism has historically been conceptualized as a condition that emerges in early childhood1,2, many autistic people are diagnosed later in life3,4,5. It is unknown whether earlier- and later-diagnosed autism have different developmental trajectories and genetic profiles. Using longitudinal data from four independent birth cohorts, we demonstrate that two different socioemotional and behavioural trajectories are associated with age at diagnosis.
No evidence for differences in contrast of the grey-white matter boundary in Autism Spectrum Disorders: An open replication
New Results doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/750117 Abstract The contrast of the interface between the cortical grey matter and the white matter is emerging as an important neuroimaging biomarker for several brain disorders. Differences in grey to white matter contrast could be related to abnormalities in neuronal migration or in intra-cortical myelination, and are an appealing biomarker for ASD.
Coronavirus tool kit may aid families with autistic children during lockdown
Thomas Bourgeron Professor, University Paris Diderot Richard Delorme Head of the Center of Excellence for Autism Spectrum Disorders and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Robert Debré Hospital On 17 March, France went on lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus, joining many other countries in Europe. French authorities ordered residents to stay at home and closed schools, as well as institutions that provide care and support for autistic children and adults.
Explaining ‘resilience’ in autism may seed new therapies
Thomas Bourgeron Professor, University Paris Diderot This article is also available in French. A few years ago, I received a phone call from the mother of a young man with autism. She had just learned that her son, who was in his 20s, has a deletion in SHANK3, one of the genes my team discovered is mutated in some people with autism. I was surprised by her news because I had met her son and found him to be much less affected than most of the carriers of this type of mutation.
