After years of planning and hype, America's 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington ended up being a strange spectacle that saw white nationalists gather in the capital, President Donald Trump deliver a divisive speech and extreme weather disrupt the day's events. Saturday marked July 4, which commemorates the 1776 adoption of the Declaration of Independence that ultimately separated the American colonies from Britain.

America still has plenty to celebrate as it turns 250

It would be almost too easy to write a snarky column about America's 250th birthday celebrations in Washington, where crowds this week are avoiding the Trump-inspired Great American State Fair, a needlessly partisan white elephant focused on Christianity and a narrow view of US history. But instead of being a hater, I find myself wanting to acknowledge the positives about America, my adopted home for the best part of 20 years.

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected President Donald Trump's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, marking a significant defeat for the Republican leader and his efforts to clamp down on immigration. The top court's nine justices ruled by six to three in favour of upholding a lower court's decision to block Mr Trump's executive order directing US agencies not ​to recognise the citizenship of children born in the US if neither parent is an American citizen or a green card holder.
