A multilayered cell envelope of a member of the Chloroflexota offers an anchoring platform for the archaellum
Abstract In a previous study, we discovered that Litorilinea aerophila, a member of the bacterial phylum Chloroflexota, had acquired a bona fide archaellum gene cluster through horizontal gene transfer from Archaea, a surprising finding given that the archaellum had long been considered an archaeal-specific motility machinery. Here, we hypothesize that the distinctive multilayered cell envelope of L.

How to Reclaim America: A Plan to Defeat MAGA and Build a Better Future
The fight for democracy isn’t over. Here’s how we take back our country — one step at a time Thomas Ott · Follow Published in The Weathered Publication · 5 min read · -- Photo by Avi Werde on Unsplash I often daydream about building the perfect union. What would it have, and how would the people be represented? Our system is definitely flawed, but for the most part, it was starting to move in the right direction — until the oligarchs teamed up with the GOP first, and then MAGA.

Elon Musk’s Power Grab: The Largest Data Breach in U.S. History
Elon Musk isn’t just a techno-conman — he’s now at the center of a mass data breach that threatens your privacy. Thomas Ott · Follow Published in The Weathered Publication · 3 min read · -- Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash My feelings on Elon Musk haven’t changed over the years — I still believe he’s a techno-conman. Now, he’s a blatant Nazi too, after not one but two Nazi salutes. Of course, he claimed he did it for laughs, but we can all see through the charade.
History Doesn’t Repeat, But It Rhymes: My Family’s Warning About Trump’s America

The Trump Rout — You Wanted It, You Got It
As the new Trump administration steamrolls through Washington, his supporters are waking up to the reality of their “mandate” It’s been just over a week, and the new Trump administration has kicked into high gear. They’ve learned how to bulldoze through the red tape in Washington, figured out how to bypass resistance, and are now moving at breakneck speed. They’re smashing and grabbing as fast as they can, overwhelming the system before anyone can react.
New Year, New Backup Plan: Building Income Streams That Thrive in Tough Times
Income Planning How I’m rethinking side hustles for 2025 after a startup layoff — and finding the key to recession-proof income Thomas Ott · Follow Published in The Backup Plan · 4 min read · -- I got lazy over the past few years working at an AI Startup. The money was good and I didn’t have to think about a backup plan in case it all went “tits up.” Well, it did all go tits up and I had to turn on my consulting and option trading side hustles.

The Silent Threat: How Bird Flu Could Spark the Next Pandemic
Are we prepared to face the looming crisis as the virus mutates and spreads? Imagine a virus that has silently decimated bird populations, leaped into mammals, and is now inching closer to humanity. This isn’t a plot from a dystopian novel — it’s unfolding across the globe. I’ve been following the low-key reports on Reddit about the worldwide bird flu outbreak. Cases of humans carrying the virus are being reported with increasing frequency, and I’m growing deeply concerned.
My Strategy for Financial Freedom Backstopped My Layoff
Discover the risks, rewards, and real returns of using cash-secured puts to generate steady income After years of dodging the corporate layoff axe, it finally hit me at the beginning of November. While it stings, it didn’t cause me an existential crisis. However, it did cause me to reflect and do a few things I write about here. What about my loss of income now? Yes, I lost a big six-figure job but my financial freedom strategy backstopped me from going into a financial free fall.
Happy Birthday to Me: A Short Message
Thank you November started with a big bang, I got laid off from a company I loved. We parted amicably and professionally, but it caught me off guard a little and still stings a bit today. Despite that bad news, I feel good about my place in the web of life and my many blessings. The first blessing is that today is my birthday. I just finished 54 years around the Sun and hope for another 54. I have a wonderful partner, children, and family.
From AI Models to Options Trading: My Journey to Building Wealth in the Markets
How a shift from short-term trading to a balanced approach with options and ETFs transformed my investment strategy When I started dabbling in the markets around 2007, I thought I could get rich by trading my AI models. Boy, was I wrong about that! I quickly learned that doing less in the markets would build wealth faster. There’s a difference between being rich and being wealthy.

Why Passively Investing in Index Funds Makes Sense for Retirement and Long-Term Planning
Discover why passive index fund investing is ideal for retirement. Learn about cost efficiency, diversification, and simplicity for long-term financial growth In November 2019 I posted a screenshot from Bloomberg that showed passive investing in the S&P500 beat AI trading (see below). In other words, dollar cost averaging your money into a good index fund beats all the crazy buying and selling nonsense of active traders. The S&P500 closed at 2,673.45 the day (November 26, 2018) I wrote the article.
Disappointed, Not Defeated: Reflections on an Election That Could Shape Our Future
As environmental and social protections face uncertain times, I’m resolved to keep fighting for a sustainable world The word “stunned” doesn’t capture how I feel this morning. I went to bed on election night feeling uneasy but still holding out hope that Vice President Kamala Harris would carry Pennsylvania and reinforce the Blue Wall in Wisconsin and Michigan. But this morning, I saw part of that Blue Wall crumble and Pennsylvania shifting in favor of former President Trump.

The Ultimate Guide to Hunting Junk Silver: Turn Pocket Change into Treasure
Learn how to find valuable pre-1965 coins and start your own mini treasure hunt for silver I love finding junk silver coins. Whenever I get change back, I look for specific coins from a certain date range because they contain 90% silver. “Junk silver” refers to pre-1965 U.S. circulated silver coins, which hold no significant numismatic or collectible value but contain a substantial amount of silver. These coins are prized for their silver content rather than their face value.
Building a Python Forex Trading Bot: What I Learned from Losing Money
A hands-on guide to coding Forex trading strategies in Python, exploring mean reversion, and understanding the value of failure I’ve had some time to continue working on my Python Forex Trading Bot (code borrowed from this source and tweaked by me) now that we’re all self-isolating. Note: This project is purely for educational purposes because, so far, when I run this bot, it tends to lose money. It’s losing less now, but it's still not profitable.
Rebasing Time Series With Python
Rebasing a time series using Pandas and plotting stock price performance. Then extracting the month and year values After revisiting an old post about seasonal trading and investing strategies, I decided to start looking at how to rebase time series in Python. It’s pretty simple considering I cheated and looked at Stack Exchange.
The Voices of Women in The Wilderness
In a thriving ecosystem, integration matters far more than independence… We just finished dinner and my partner and children wanted to go souvenir shopping in downtown Moab, Utah. We had reached well beyond the halfway point of our 2-week odyssey through the desert Southwest by then and wanted a relaxing evening before exploring Zion National Park the next day. They sauntered off to look at things and I meandered slowly along the main road.
Seasonal Trading and Investing Strategies
Learn the one seasonal trading and investing strategy that’s made me money for the past 13 years Years ago a reader of my old blog named Eric from DataPunks blog posted an interesting analysis that looked at timing your market buys in the S&P500. He wrote some R code (see below) that segmented the market returns between November to April and May to October. He wanted to see if there is a seasonal effect to trading or investing in the markets and create a novel strategy.
A Special Message to Our Helene Affected Appalachian Friends
We are all in this together This is a special message to our friends in Appalachia who have been affected by the massive flooding brought on by Hurricane Helene. You all are in my heart and thoughts. I hope you and your loved ones are safe and the floodwaters quickly recede in your communities. I wanted to take a moment to speak about community. One of the great things about our American spirit is our ability to set aside differences in times of crisis.
Install H2O’s Wave on AWS Lightsail or EC2
How to set up Wave, H2O’s new open-source Python-based app framework I recently had to set up H2O’s Wave Server on AWS Lightsail and build a simple Wave App as a Proof of Concept (POC). H2O Wave is an open-source Python-based app framework and we use it to build many different kinds of interactive applications at H2O. Wave ships with a deployment server that uses Uvicorn but it can run on any ASGI server. If you’ve developed with FastAPI, then using Wave will make a lot of sense.
Making Money in Options With The Wheel Strategy
Selling premium can be lucrative but not without risks When I started investing in the mid-to-late 1990s, I learned that options are sophisticated financial instruments designed for experienced and savvy investors. I learned about buying call and put options and their associated risks. I also learned about selling options and how they could expose you to unlimited risk.
The Yield Curve is No Longer Inverted
A recession is coming Of the handful of economic indicators I closely monitor, the 2-year/10-year Treasury Bill interest rate spread is the one that carries the most weight for me. I watch that indicator like a hawk! When that spread turns negative — meaning the 2-year T-bill interest rates are higher than the 10-year T-bill rates — it signals a looming recession. This negative spread is commonly known as an inverted yield curve, and it’s successfully predicted every recession since at least 1980.
Guidelines for naming and studying plasma membrane domains in plants - Nature Plants

Abstract Biological membranes play a crucial role in actively hosting, modulating and coordinating a wide range of molecular events essential for cellular function. Membranes are organized into diverse domains giving rise to dynamic molecular patchworks. However, the very definition of membrane domains has been the subject of continuous debate.

Why I'm Betting on Semiconductor Holders (SMH)
If you've been keeping an eye on tech trends like I have, you know semiconductors are the unsung heroes behind our favorite gadgets and cutting-edge innovations. Just ask any Nvidia shareholder right now, they're loving GPUs! These tiny chips are the heart and soul of everything from our smartphones to electric cars, and they're absolutely essential in our digital world. Think about it: without semiconductors, none of our beloved tech toys would work.
Nostalgia For an Age That Never Existed
By Thomas Ott Photo by Marija Zaric on Unsplash I am a Gen X'er and at 53 years old I've been lucky to see a thing or two. As my generation is peaking professionally and in life, we should all be celebrating and sharing our unique snarkiness with our children and even grandchildren. Instead, we're yelling at kids to "get off my lawn." We are becoming what we always ridiculed, Boomers.
Workers Getting Laid Off Are Fighting Back
By Thomas Ott Photo by Igor Omilaev on Unsplash I come from a long line of German workers who had the benefit of stable jobs and professions all their life. I grew up working in America so my experiences are quite different of my late father and his German family. I've survived through many layoffs and numerous organizational restructuring; many of my cherished coworkers did not.
Staying Cool in a Hot World
By Thomas Ott Shade matters, more than ever in a warming world Photo by K. Mitch Hodge on Unsplash A recent Twitter interaction led me down the rabbit hole of how the use of air conditioning (aka cooling) affects climate change. A World Economic Forum article points toward cooling consuming 20% of global electricity demand. That's a staggering amount that will only climb as parts of the world become too hot to inhabit without...
The Harsh Reality of Climate Resiliency
By Thomas Ott Power to the people - building climate resiliency Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash I don't like the term "climate resiliency" because it feels like we've lost the war against climate change. It feels like it could be easily co-opted by corporations to excuse their bad environmental behavior. Yet, you and I have to face the harsh reality that we do need to become resilient against the coming...

The Troubling Problem of E-Waste
The Troubling Problem of E-Waste Why regenerative design is needed now more than ever Photo by Dustan Woodhouse on Unsplash Over the holidays I read a disturbing bit of news. In October 2025, Microsoft will end free support for its Windows 10 operating system. This will force many users to upgrade but they’ll run into a big problem. Many computers running Windows 10 don’t have the right hardware specifications to upgrade to Windows 11.

Options, YOLOing, And Being a Degenerate Gambler
The good times will never end It looks like I’ve become an active trader again. The all-time highs in technology stocks have lured this old trader out of his lair because there’s some sick money to be made; opportunity is knocking and I can’t pass this up! This market smells a lot like the late 1990s. I haven’t seen this type of euphoria and greed for a least twenty years! There’s a lot of price volatility and money flowing in from everywhere.
I’m going to build on all the good work
I’m going to build on all the good work After much thought over the holidays, I’ve decided to select the word “Build” for my new Word of the Year. Why? Because I’m going to build on all the good work I did in 2023. Despite a few fits and starts, last year was a revelation for me. My focus on eight areas of my life put my life into a deeper perspective, and I’m glad I did that.
An Update on Weathered
I’ve been writing on and off Medium for the past few years and it’s been a self-discovery gold mine. I would start writing on topics that concerned or interested me until they led to other subjects that held my focus. Writing is a means to an end for me, a way for me to understand myself in this infinite universe and share something of value with my readers. My journey led to an amazing side project that reconnected me with something very important to me in my younger years, environmentalism.
A Review of My Word For The Year: Focus
I did good, for the most part This year I jumped on the Word of the Year bandwagon that OG Yael Wolfe started many years ago on Medium. I think finding a word to focus on (heh) is a fantastic thing to do and it helped me focus (heh) on what was important in 2023. Ironically, “Focus” was my word of the year, and I did focus on many things. Heh! This year, I decided to focus on eight things: health, relationships, family, work, writing, being prepared, reading more, and my peace.
Food Security Will Be The New Wealth in a +2C World
My father used to wake me up early during summer vacation to help him in the garden. I hated it. I was a bratty teenager who stayed up late watching "Up All Night" on USA and slept in till 10 AM every morning. Not my father, he was up before 8 AM and ready to tackle yard work. I lived on a larger-than-average property, just under an acre in a population-dense county in New Jersey. My father had grown up on a farm in Germany and loved to have some space between people.
Migrating Weathered to Its Own Domain
It's with a joyous heart that I announce the migration of my Weathered Publication from Medium to its own domain and place on the Internet. I wanted to continue the fight to stop Climate Change, live more Sustainably, and fight for Environmental and Social Justice, but Medium has put many obstacles in my place.
