Introduction Persisting in academic science is a major challenge, with increasing competition for positions across career stages resulting in prolonged job insecurity and substantial declines in career length compared to 50 years ago [1,2]. At the same time, the persistence of gender disparities in science [3] means that female researchers continue to leave academia more often, and earlier, than male researchers [4].
