Op-ed | When mental health crises happen, New Yorkers deserve more than one option | amNewYork
On a recent summer morning in Queens, Jordyn encountered a neighbor she knew to be living with a serious mental health condition. He had been pacing the block for several days, talking to himself, and exhibiting increasingly concerning behavior. Believing he needed mental health care, and knowing the risks of escalation and violence involved in sending police in situations like this, she called 911 with one repeated request: send a mental health response unit, not law enforcement.
The World Cup Is Coming. Our Cities Must Protect Their People.
Soccer is called the world’s game because it is truly global and belongs to everyone. The kids playing barefoot in the park, the fans in the cheap seats, the communities that turn every match into a block party. This year, the FIFA Men’s World Cup will bring that game to our own cities: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York-New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.
Op-ed | Amazon two-day shipping is speedy. Let’s make it safe in NYC
Posted on If you live in New York, you see Amazon workers in Amazon vests, delivering Amazon packages in Amazon vehicles, every single day. But did you know that none of these workers work for Amazon? For most New Yorkers, convenience is all we see when we shop online. Click, buy, delivered. But what feels so easy to us is hurting our neighborhoods and the workers in Amazon vests who make it happen.
Opinion: A healthier and safer city requires real solutions
By Sandy Nurse and Tiffany Cabán January 15, 2025 04:00 AM ET From our sidewalks to the subway cars we take every day, the visceral reality of our fellow New Yorkers experiencing homelessness and mental illness is dire. Whether crime is up or down means very little if our mayor and governor continue failing to address the very reasons why so many people find themselves in such public states of despair.
At-Will Employment Must End. Our Civil Rights Depend on It.
New York City can become the first major US city to require employers to give workers advance notice of termination and a written explanation of their firing. Ad Policy The harassment started when Tiffany Jade Munroe’s coworkers found out she was transgender. Then she was fired from her warehouse job with no explanation and no warning. And there was nothing she could do: In New York, it is almost always legal to fire a worker with no reason and no recourse. This is known as at-will employment.

Opinion: Don’t forget about the city’s capital budget
June at the City Council brings a churn of public hearings and backroom meetings as council members and the mayor race to cut a deal that will shape spending, in part, for the year ahead. While significant debate covers expense budget programs like language access and workforce development services, another pot of money largely remains out of the headlines: the capital budget.
We Visited the Solidarity Encampment at Columbia University. Here’s What It’s Really Like.
We Visited the Solidarity Encampment at Columbia University. Here’s What It’s Really Like. Published April 24, 2024 If you only go by the recent statements from Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul, and President Joe Biden, you might conclude that a student protest against the mass killing in Gaza is worse than the killing itself.
Opinion: We visited the solidarity encampment at Columbia University. Here’s what it’s really like.
These official statements, and so many posts on social media, depict the Gaza Solidarity Encampment on the Columbia University campus as a cesspit of antisemitic hatred and a threat to the safety of all Jewish students and faculty.
Social housing for queer liberation
As the co-chairs of the NYC Council’s LGBTQIA+ Caucus, it is our duty to uplift our city’s proud legacy as home to world-changing queer movements and longstanding queer communities, and to do our part to help ensure that queer New Yorkers are able to live safe, healthy, joyous lives for generations to come.
Opinion: Social housing is public safety
To achieve the public safety outcomes everyday New Yorkers need and deserve, the time is now to invest in what policy nerds like me call “social housing” – permanently affordable homes, democratically owned and controlled by the people who live there, in conjunction with the public. Social housing comes in various forms, from limited equity cooperatives to community land trusts to even public housing, but what it boils down to is simple: safety from displacement.
Opinion: The New York City Council must override Adams' vetoes and increase housing voucher access
Last month, New York City reported a grim record that more than 100,000 people were housed in its shelters, with more than 81,000 in traditional homeless shelters. The Adams administration has not provided regular updates with a detailed breakdown of the population, but recent figures show more than 50,000 are longtime New Yorkers who are unhoused - a number that has grown since Mayor Adams took office. New York City’s homelessness crisis is among its greatest challenges.
Opinion: Reduce the size and scope of the NYPD and DOC
February 10, 2023 06:10 AM ET This week, controversy engulfed the City Council’s Progressive Caucus, of which I am a member. At issue: the caucus’ decision to tighten itself up from a label anyone can claim regardless of their policy positions, their record as legislators, or even their attendance at caucus meetings – into a coherent political unit based on shared beliefs.
Puerto Rico, like New York, needs public power
It has been more than a month since Hurricane Fiona cut out all power on the island, doing an estimated $4 billion worth of damage to the electrical grid. Fiona made landfall five years after Hurricane Maria collapsed Puerto Rico’s neglected energy system, leaving thousands dead, many due to loss of electricity in poorer communities. Clearly, we need to address Puerto Rico’s energy system.
New York must fight for equity - the real kind
By Tiffany Cabán New York Daily News | Mar 07, 2022 at 5:00 AM Something suspicious is going on with the word “equity.” It seems like everybody is for it, even people with opposite interests. Whether it be democratic socialists like me, disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, conservative billionaire mega-donor Stephen Ross, or staunchly anti-labor mega-corporation Amazon (for whom the term’s primary meaning is “stock”), nobody seems to oppose “equity” these days.
"Can We Get Them to Join a Movement?" How Astoria Stood Up to One of America's Top Polluters
Zohran Mamdani addresses a rally against NRG’s proposal for a fracked gas power plant in Astoria. Photo by Corey Torpie. In September 2020, over 200 people gathered in Astoria Park for the neighborhood’s largest political rally in recent memory. Their purpose was to oppose new fossil fuel infrastructure being pushed by NRG, a New Jersey-based energy conglomerate that owns a number of power plants in Astoria.
Decarcerate Rikers Island right now
By Tiffany Cabán New York Daily News | Sep 15, 2021 at 5:00 AM For seven hours on Monday, I bore witness to the deadly conditions on Rikers Island. What I saw is beyond anything I experienced as a public defender. Intake cells, where folks should only spend their first 24 hours, are dangerously overcrowded, with people waiting up to seven or eight days without access to attorneys or medical care.
How DSA Won - and Lost - in New York City Elections
This year, New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) chapter faced its first real bout of adversity after an astounding post-2016 resurgence. The democratic socialists chose to endorse six candidates for the City Council and only two will end up winning, a setback that’s already causing a bit of schadenfreude among the career Democrats who root against their success. For socialists, the losses in the 2021 Democratic primaries sting because last year was such a success.
Schools Reopening Need Resources for Students, Not Funding for Police
This fall, many students across the country are expecting to finally return to their school buildings for full-time, in-person learning. This is a huge relief for lots of kids and parents alike. But given the unprecedented trauma we’ve just lived through, it’s also a challenge for elected leadership because it’s more important than ever that every school is a safe haven. For all students, and especially for Black and brown students, that means making schools police-free.
Tiffany Cabán: Why I Am Running For New York City Council
In the face of a pandemic and police violence, elected leaders have failed to keep us safe and to champion the voices of marginalized communities like mine. NYPD Took a Step Toward Fascism on Tuesday When it Kidnapped Nikki Stone

(Tayfun Coskun / Anadolu Agency via Getty Images) On July 28, a couple of hundred protesters in Manhattan watched helplessly as 18-year-old trans woman Nikki Stone was snatched off the street by plainclothes officers, shoved into an unmarked van, and taken who knows where. Ad Policy Protesters who attempted to intervene were met with pepper spray to the face. Shortly after, video of the kidnapping was posted on Twitter for the world to see.

Bail Reform Rollbacks are a Dangerous Failing of Moral Courage
The Place for New York Policy and politics Developed in conjunction with Joomla extensions. State lawmakers wrongly bowed to law enforcement pressure on bail reform, the author writes (photo: governor's office) Predictably, and disappointingly, the New York State Legislature rolled back last year’s historic and hard fought bail reforms at the eleventh hour.
Opinion | Kim Foxx is the State’s Attorney Cook County needs
This Tuesday, Cook County residents have a very clear choice to make when they head to the polls to cast their ballot for state’s attorney. On one side, there’s Kim Foxx, a progressive prosecutor who has remained accountable to the community that elected her. The alternatives, such as Bill Conway and Bob Fioretti, offer a return to yesteryear when too many poor people of color were eaten alive by the system of mass incarceration for the most minor of offenses.
Tiffany Cabán Knows Who the Bad Guys Are
Interview by Ella Mahony Yesterday, headlines broke that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had endorsed Tiffany Cabán for the Queens County district attorney race. If Cabán wins, the nearly two and a half million residents of Queens will be able to claim not just one, but two democratic socialist politicians of national significance.
